Title: exhaust help!
Post by: cascade on October 14, 2008, 01:28:23 AM
Hey all, I'm new to these forums and new to my 08 GS 500 f... But I've been loving my bike and love all the info i've been able to find in here!

I'm looking to do an aftermarket exhaust but honestly don't know anything about it... My hope is to find something that both sounds better and looks better. I love the looks of the stuby pipes...
anyway... MY Q's:

what are my options? is the fitment on my bike the same as some other bike that is more widely offered? I can't seem to find anything that says it will fit my bike specificly, but I find a lot for the gsxr's, r6's, cbr's....

how involved is the install? is a "slip-on" just exactly that? can it be easaly mounted by me(someone with little to no mechanical experience)?...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Couple options...read the Wiki if you haven't yet...

A full exhaust means from the engine back, which increases flow and thus increases power.  A combination of a full exhaust, air filter and (must!) rejet makes your GS more responsive and fun.  This is more expensive ($3-400 new, possibly cheaper on ebay) but is actually a much easier install, simply the 4 bolts at the header and one for the bracket on the rear peg.

A slip on means that you will have to cut your stock exhaust off just past the can.  You will retain the stock headers (engine back), but you can use almost any can you want if you're willing to mess with fabbing brackets and such.  Do a search on this site for examples, but you could probably pick up something on Ebay that would fit.  Keep in mind that while this is cheaper, it really doesn't increase flow much, only sounds better, and you have to fab/cut/grind things yourself.

Happy modding.

unless you've got the cash to get a full system ($300-$400), you should go with a slip-on or bolt-on can.  you can get them on ebay for $100-$200 usually depending on what you want.  the popular names are Yoshimura, Vance & Hines, D&D, scorpion, etc.

I think you can make just about anything fit with some fabbing and/or welding.  Might take a little creativity but almost anything can be done.

The R6 slip on is the easiet from what I remember.(same pipe size)  Remember you still have to rejet the carbs with a slip on.  Read the wiki. http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/
