Title: Another (different) Starter problem...
Post by: laserred97gt on October 18, 2008, 09:54:34 AM
I have had this issue with my bike since I got it in May, but since it never leaves me stranded, I have not worried about it too much.  Now that Winter Project time is coming, I figured I would fix the problem.

When I go to start my bike, sometimes I get the "Click" and nothing moving.  Other times, it cranks right over.  When I get the "Click", I put the bike in first gear, roll forward a bit and let out the clutch. Them I can hit the starter and "Vroom" she starts right up.

Some people have described this as a "dead spot" on the starter, but I am not 100% positive that its an accurate description.

What do you guys think?  :dunno_white:

First thing to do is clean all the terminals and make sure they are tight. A worn/dirty comm` or worn/stocking brushes in the starter motor would cause this problem and rocking the bike in gear might cause the motor to turn slightly through the sprag-clutch and free things off or provide a better contact at the comm`............but the first thing you need to do is rule out the solenoid. Next time it clicks without spinning the starter, check and make sure there is 12v on the motor terminal. If not its the solenoid, if there is then you can suspect the starter motor.

Good Call!  I will now carry my DVOM in my backpack and do just that.
