Title: new Rider/Bike questions - 94 gs500e
Post by: xanthras on October 21, 2008, 09:50:55 AM
I am a new rider, only have my permit right now, i will be taking the class in the spring. Anyways. I purchased a 94 gs500e with 2600 miles on it for $1200. It had been sitting in this guys shed for the last 6 years. He did not winterize it. I took it to a deal and they got the carbs cleaned and running well. So here is the question. They told me I have some rust in the gas tankl and that I may want to get it lined. I have been doing some research and the lining does not seem all the great. Seems like it is just a temporary fix that can go relly badly if you do it wrong. Not to mention, wont the tank continue to rust from the inside out even with a lining? I was considering that rusteco product. I have seen a few posts but wondered if anyone has some advice on this? The shop installed a fuel filter to avoid the carb issue again but I would like to get this rust under control.  Other than that and some new fork seals she is almost new.

Thanks! BTW. This forum is great. I have found all sorts of useful info!

I'd look into either the Kreem or Por products.  You can use the search feature to find all the info/opinions that you need to make a decision.  Of you can send your tank to Buddha on this forum, b/c I think he offers tank lining using one of those 2 products for a reasonable price.

You treat the tank with acid to kill all the rust and clean it out before you line it so the rust should not be a prob again. Or you could just send the tank to Buddha and he can handle it from there.
Congrats on your bike and welcome.
