Title: The $4 Wal-Mart Flush Mount Turn Signal Write-Up
Post by: Jackstand Johnny on October 25, 2008, 08:20:28 AM
Well I figured since everybody has been bugging me about losing those ugly rear turn signals and money has been so tight, I would find a way to make a cheap pair for the time being. I went to wal-mart for some odds and ends and stumbled across the boat/trailer isle where I found some great running lights for trailers. This is where it all started. Here's the list:

1. Trailer running lights(Less than $2 a piece, or $7 a piece for the LED model
2. Drill with 1/4 drill bit(could be a bit smaller)
3. Dre,el tool with cut off wheel
4. 1/4 Sheet metal screws
5. Wire
6. loop terminal ends and wire connectors

Drill the pilot holes where the signals will mount. The lights don't come with a ground wire, so you'll have to connect the negative wire from the bikes wiring harness using a wire with a one of those ring terminal ends. stick it behind mounting hole with the ground plate on it, and screw it in place. Use the dremel tool to cut off a tsmall piece of the tab that holds the amber cover on thats facing behind the bike so the light can be seen better. It's really easy to do I I'm not going to bother with detailed instructions on how to do it. Heres the finished product.

I'm going to paint the plastic black on em at some point, but not today. Hope yall like em. Theyre real cheap to do, take no time to make, and look way better than the stockers to me.

I think theyre great for the price. Ill be painting the frame of them black tomorrow to fit the bike a bit better. Maybe I should quit posting pics of my bike until it's all done. I'm seeing a trend of people pointing out the next thing I plan on changing on my bike.

Please take no offence to my post I was just saying don't aorry with what other think.
It's your bike and what you think about it is what matters.

I think that if you like the look and they satisfy the authorities then they're cool, but if you think they're actually going to be any use signalling your intentions to other road users, forget it.
But then if we wanted to be safe we wouldn't ride.

If you want cheap flush mounts that look decent, go to advanced auto or autozone and get some truck runnings lights. the kind that go on top of the cab tear drop look. Tape off and paint blck the rest. or paint with same color as bike. There a little big but in my opinion better than the square boat lights. But If your happy thats all that counts. screw the rest.

i love write ups with pictures, cause we get to see so much of everyone's bikes. thanks for yours :)

as far as functional, i don't think that will do much for cars behind you, :( but they are signals, and considering your rear plastics are gone, rock it !

do we have a video clip of your bike running with that exhaust yet ? does it make yer ears bleed on 50 mile rides ?

rock on ! :)

Damn, you know what? I was just watching a movie yesterday where a guy got into a truck with those running lights on the cab and I thought about using those. I had already bought these though.

Cafeboy, no offense taken. I like hearing what other people think when ideas like this surface, because other ideas start to surface as well like those truck running lights or a way to improve the ones I've made thats all.

I had my girlfriend stand at the end of my driveway in broad daylight while I drove it up the road and signalled different ways. She said she could see em from far away, and I made sure she knew to not look at my signals, but at the bike as a whole to really test if they work or not.
Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it and I'll have some better pictures up of the bike when I my B4 rear hugger on, clean up those signals, and find a better spot for my taillight and license plate.

The truck light would be sweet
They sell some wedge lights on ebay for bikes that I have used and I loved them.
They are about 1 1/2 inch by 4 inch and very bright.

Also the truck lights might look pretty snazzy on a faired model for the front. Dont know never tried.

Here's how it looks now that I got them painted with the rear subframe.  I used spray on bedliner for the frame.
