Well I can attest to the flight capabilities of the GS as of today. I was coming up a little steep hill by my house that leads onto a flat bridge. Well the pavement leading up is kinda bumpy and uneven so I put a little more of my weight onto my legs to suck up the bumps a little bit and it musta been like preloading a dirt bike before a jump because when i got to the top the bike just lifted off. :o
Anyway I didn't catch too much air, but I got enough that I heard the engine whine for a sec before I touched back down. It really wasnt' scary at all, I just kept the throttle constant and never missed a beat when I landed.
Before any of the squid flames start flying :nana: I wasn't dicking around or anything just riding at a normal pace and didn't think i would do what I did.
All and all though it felt pretty damn cool and of course there was noone around at all to see me do it so the onlyu place I ca brag about is here on the forum.

Nothing like the feeling of getting airbourne on a bike whether by accident or on purpose and no matter what the bike. Welcome to the club: - The Best air is the unexpected air just always land straight.
:guns:
i used to street bmx so i can testify to any air is good air. just hope you land straight, ive had cracked ribs and many sprang ankles to prove that landing straight is good  but a 40lbs bicycle and a 380lbs motorcycle is a bit different

You rebel, you! ;)
fun aint it
That gives me an idea, I have always wanted a dirt bike, I might just throw some dirt tyres on the GS500 and take it to the dirt track....
Any suggestions of tyre sizes best suited to dirt riding, I should be able to get away with a 150 rear?! :nana:

, that gives me an idea, i use my gs on sundays to go to services. is it possible to get dual sport tires that would fit a gs wheelset?, i would have to have a spare set of wheels, cause when i get into the town, 6 miles up a twisty rough mountain rd, then 3 miles on a gravel road that somewhat resembles a moto-cross track

I chase my kids around on their dirt bikes with the GS. It does *ok* in the dirt but just barely *ok*. It takes extreme amounts of control and precision to keep it upright in the dirt. The steering is pretty heavy and the bike likes to slide out and flop on its side very easily. It does cool rolling burnouts though :thumb:
Watch out for the fork seals if you do this, I had to replace a set after a few jumps with the kids on the back :P
Im a Self proclaimed moron sometimes, and I jumped my GS500 a couple months ago on a ride in the Rocky montains near my house. I was doin about 80km/h and launched off a small abrupt hill on a backroad. The first time, it was unittentional, the 2nd - 5th time it sure wasnt. its fun jumping stuff that isnt supposed to be. If anyone calls me a aquid, they can f%$k themselves, i could probably outride them anyday of the week.
Squid rather, not aquid, now im a squid, i cant even spell!!!
I recommend something lighter and with more suspension travel than the GS. Off-roading will be REALLY hard on the suspension and on up through the bike.
If you want to do both upgrade to a dual sport. Lots of good choices out there. The Kawi KLR 650 (sometimes called the "Jeep" of motorcycles and a diesel version is what the Marines ride), KTM 640 Adventure (a vertical twin like the GS), and just about every other brand has one as well.
