Title: Lowsided @ 20mph this morning (56k killer)
Post by: tussey on October 28, 2008, 10:28:42 AM
Lowsided my bike @ 20mph today. I'm okay.
Damage to me:
Scraped left palm
Scraped left knee

Damage to bike: Nothing major
Slightly bent shift lever
Slightly bent left peg
Missing Suzuki Label
Bent Centerstand
Minor scrapes to clutch lever, left side turn signals (front/rear)

I'm really impressed how well these GS500's hold up. No stupid plastic fairings to crack.  :flipoff:

Diagnosis:
The light turned green. I was making a wide sweeping left turn (you can see the intersection is quite large). I was rolling the throttle like MSF teaches. When I get to the white line in picture 2 the car in front of me is stopped about 10 feet ahead. I don't panic, a bit surprised. I identify my exit path, there is enough room for the bike to fit in the shoulder. I plan on stopping just beyond her bumper. I apply the brakes pretty hard and the next thing I know I'm laying on the ground. The bike dumped me and spun 180 degrees. I'm a bit confused. I immediately realize I must have applied too much braking in the turn (too much rear I suspect). Then I became confused because I THOUGHT I was upright enough to begin braking, guess not. Many people asked me if I was ok.

I get up pretty quickly. Checked myself I'm ok. There is a huge gaping hole in my $140 Dainese Racing glove. (see rant below) and my jeans are torn at the knee. I'm good to go though. Pick up the bike. Finish riding to school, attend class then go home inspect the bike and dress the wounds.

Dainese? More like Cheapnese.
<rant>
I'm freaking livid that my gloves didn't hold up. It was a minor 20mph low side and the glove ripped completely open. This is the second pair of this glove that I have owned. The last pair I returned under warranty because the leather was tearing near the cuffs. It tore in the place that I pull to fit them on my hand. So with my second pair I put them on differently so the same area wouldn't tear. This pair of gloves is <6 months. It's a $140 double stitched 100% genuine leather racing glove.
I call bulloh my goodness. The leather they use in this glove is the cheapest thinnest stuff ever. I'm SO angry that my hand was scraped. That should NOT have happened. I'm writing a letter to Dainese informing them I'll never buy another product and I want my $140 back. The ONLY job this glove has to do is withstand a crash. That's its SOLE purpose and it failed which makes the glove 100% useless. </rant>

glad you're OK!!
you really should at least get your money back for those gloves. they shouldn't tear apart.
I had $20 BMX gloves that looked to be more durable...  :o :o

Glad you're OK.

Cheaponeese ... made by the chineese ...

OK you need to run the rear axle bolt left to right ... it will get protected by the muffler if you dump it on the right.

Cool.

Glad to hear you're ok. That sucks that your glove gave way so easily. I agree that it failed to do its job and you should get your money back.

You haven't uploaded med_2.

Yes, it sounds like you applied the brakes while you were still swerving.  I'm a strong beliver in swerving m'self.  Unless you're going really slowly, it takes longer to come to a stop than it takes to swerve; often swerving buys you the time you need to do your next move calmly, without overdoing it.

The bit just above the strap makes me wonder if it got caught in something and ripped, and then the seam gave way.  I do like gloves with some kind of palm protection.  My Racer High-End gloves (really, the most quality gloves I've found that fit) have a little palm armor to help absorb the slidey and interfere with something that might rip the glove.

I had a pair of gloves fail on me also, was fieldsheer highway(I think, I know it was fieldsheer) the left palm split from side to side.  And this wasn't in a crash, just holding the handlebars, it slowly opened up over the course of about 1.5 hours of riding.  I would have stopped but I was halfway to work when it started and had to ride there and back home.  I got a free replacement for them which I use as backup and warm weather gloves now, seem to be holding up better but I don't completely trust them.

Now I have a pair of Teknic Lightning Waterproofs, they're nice. and they are waterproof.  Tested by running water over the glove with my hand in it for about 10 minutes.  and a couple of rainstorms up here.

I have Fieldsheer pants and jacket as well, I have to say I am less than impressed with the overall quality and won't be going with them on my next round of gear.

I think i have similar gloves to Roadstargirl, mine have carbon fibre armour on the top of the knuckles and joints in each finger, then on the palm and outside edge of the hand a wrap around of kevlar type stuff.

sucks, and I'd be pissed too about the gloves. FWIW, I can recommend the MotoGP Nitrous gloves, they survived my lowside where I went down at least twice that fast, and I had a hand on the ground the whole slide. I bought another pair. I still use that first pair, it really didn't damage them much at all, the only problem I've had is weak stitching in the fingertips that I've had to get repaired on both sets. I'm afraid they've been discontinued, but you might be able to find some or something similar.

BUMMER DUDE!

That sucks on the gloves though. TO be honest that is the scariest thing to see is gloves that just tear apart at seams. I have and always recommend the Teknic Lightning series of gloves. http://www.teknicgear.com/catalog.php?styleid=1&pid=14

I have lowsided three times and these gloves have held up each time. YOu should never wear your gloves after a crash unless you a certain none of the stiching is broken. Infact gloves are basically disposable. The sweat from you hands, and crap that gets on your hands through out a day destroys the leather of the palm.  Basically every riding season you need to get new gloves if you want to maintain a maximum of protection.

Either way the gloves you had failed in a terrible way, and shame on Dianese.

Here is proof.

Ahh, but I cant find a picture of the gloves. Later tonight I will snap some pics of them. Didn't even tear through the kevlar protection on the palm.
