Hey everyone,
I recently bought a 2004 GS500F but with no deals in it whatsoever. It just has a grey SUZUKI logo on both fairings from top to bottom. Here's a pic:
I was thinking about going to my local body shop and having them paint the stock black and grey design on each fairing as well as the GS500F logos on each side of the seat towards the back. Does this sound like a good idea, or do you have any cool or crazy designs that I could have a look at? My budget is around $300-400 so any input would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!! :)
Wow! How lucky to have a blank canvas like that!!!!
I would totally remove the Suzy decal and throw on some cool design...
See if you can do a GS500R design instead of the F and kinda fool people. I think the F is kinda goofy. Definitely go with black and silver tho...
Maybe a flat yellow ghost flame on the front or something like on the Kawasaki ZX10... Either that or do white and black designs like on old Yamaha's...
Either way... you are lucky! GO nuts! If you find a good sign/decal shop they could do something pretty cool for under 300 bucks no problem.
Check these designs for ideas:

But do something custom looking...

I love the zx14. I have always been fond of a flat charcoal with gloss black flames. Ive seen it only once, and damn it was the sickest shizzle ive ever seen bizzle!
Personal opinion is, I'd stray right away from that GS-R type thing. It just looks plain naff in my honest opinion - nobody thinks a GS is a Gixxer - better to dress your GS as a nice looking GS rather than a poor GSXR copy.
That said, there is nothing wrong with all the other GSXR type look and feel mods such as some of the designs above (minus the big red R)....I actually had a GS500F logo made up as the UK bikes DONT have such a logo and it's based on the GSX-R type design but, it says GS500F...I like it. Cost me £20 (about $35ish bucks). With $300-$400 you could probably even get Suzuki decals and add to them, rather than have it painted which I dont think you'd get done for htat kinda money.
As I say, just opinion tho... :thumb:

+1
and adding, as always:
consider spending the $400 on upgraded suspension, Katana frontend, Katana rear shock, and the best mod ever, as GSTWIN decal ! it's been known to add 20-30 hp and 15-30 lb-ft of torque BEFORE EVEN STICKING IT ON ! (I kid, but it's one of the best things you can sticker your bike/car/laptop with, and you'll get mucho love for it! )
see ?

that being said, yes, steer clear of the gs-R stickers, it's just well, lame. :(
i've been wondering what a flat AND 3M type of sticker job on a gs would look like. go nuts, but DONT PAIN IT ON, cause you may change your mind in a month ;)
this is why the suspension mods will love you every single time you start the bike, and the paint will only love you when it's OFF ;)
I'd take off the grey Suzuki decal and leave it clean. Less is more.
The bumblebee is the most awesome race paint scheme ever - but it's a Yammie thing... :icon_mrgreen:

Thanks for all the help guys!!!
I think I'm going to go with the black flame with a ghostly outline on one of the pics Danny500 posted. Danny500 do you have a bigger version of this picture? Thanks again guys!!! :) :) :)
More pictures here.

You will find that it, too, is kind of a Yamaha thing. ;)
Flames are over done and mis understood ...
When you paint flames on an aircooled bike its just an invitation for it to run hot ... hot enough to catch fire ...
That yamaha bumblebee pattern is actually a road pattern and I like it .. .a lot.
Cool.

Hmmm, that doesn't sound good. Is there another kind of paint that can be used so the bike won't overheat?
Nope ... all paints when painted to the flame design will become heat sources ... so instead of your bike riding with 20 degree air around it, it will now have 350 degree air ... just because of the flames.
Cool.

Sarcasm is fun...
Ok rock_rebel.. I don't have a bigger pic, but I was thinking something different. Instead of using black paint... try using a flat yellow of the same hue as the bike...
This will give you the ghost affect.
I think.. personally, you might want to paint the rear end black to give it a 2 tone look if you're all about that. OK.. maybe the GSR idea is cheezy... sorry! Lol..
I'll see if I can't shop something up to give you an idea of what I'm trying to figure out... lol.

amen also the only thing i have had people think mine was is an older cbr cause of the one piece seat but still don't be a poser

They actually make bumblebee plastics for my WR, and I love the look. But mine is going to have the 'cracked and dirty' paint scheme pretty soon, so there's no point in spending money on the look.

Wow I wish my bike had no stripes! Took me forever to get the stripes and gunk off the fairings, and the stripes on the tank are under the clearcoat.

wd-40, terry cloth, elbow grease do the trick and if you have plenty of wd-40 things go pretty well
edit: tank strips remained because thats a paint job not just sticker removal.
Decided to put a new post in this thread :D
I just recently completed a motorcycle safety course and writing the test for my bike permit soon :). I still haven't figured out what type of design to put on the bike. I was thinking either having a body shop paint the original stripes back on, or have a yellow or grey ghost flame effect. Does anyone have pics of a yellow GS500 with cool design? I'm looking for some stickers as well. Still haven't figured out where to get them yet. :icon_sad:
Thanks for your input guys!
Yeah I think your kinda lucky to have one solid color, I wouldnt paint it, Id do vinyl decals instead even if they are larger pieces, If you dont like them you can always strip them off and try a different look.
You might try checking here at tapeworks.com Here is the generic sport bike kits http://www.tapeworks.com/GENERIC%20Kits/GenericKits_sport.html
Find a local shop with a vinyl cutter and try working out a custom pattern with them for the vinyl. I prefer to try to stay away from pre-made designs and think custom is always the way to go. If you find a good shop near you that cuts the vinyl good chances that the person who works there is a graphic designer and will be excited to work on a custom graphic design for a blank canvas like that. Just give him a few pictures of what you like and let him create something custom from there. But i would start with vinyl instead of paint since paint is more expensive to remove and change. If you really like a design then you can always go back and get it painted on.
Heck for the price you pay for a full sticker job it would be cheaper to pay someone to air brush. Air brushing Pisses all over stickers and looks great. You will not find 2 bikes with the same air brush style on it.
It worked out $180 cheaper for me to air brush then get fancy stickers made up for my GSXes550.
Here is my $7 fixer: (http://i490.photobucket.com/albums/rr264/Toogoofy317/P1000406.jpg) It's the Metal Mulishia logo! It is going to go away soon. I'm still trying to figure out what I want!

I have some tribal decals I never used. PM me. I'll let you have em for the cost of shipping. They are larger versions of the ones pictured here.
