Title: How much should I offer for a 04 or 05 gs500 with seized engine
Post by: seanathin48 on November 02, 2008, 01:02:49 AM
I have found what looks to be an 04 or 05 gs500 that is complete with a seized engine and he wants to part it out or sell it whole, just wondering how much the first and second gen parts are interchangeable, what would I want off this bike? I was thinking about buying the front headlight at least, what about the rear shock and front forks are they better? This bike is a nice blue color and has nice fairings (no decals) and windshield. He hasnt responded yet, I cant tell the exact year and if it has dual front brakes. BTW Im about to buy a 90 and 92 gs500e.

I would have the useful bits, the ones that are likely to fail.....relays, reg/rect, ignition module, solenoid, control cables etc....... And the bits likely to get damaged if you drop it, indicator arms, lenzes, mirrors, engine cases etc.

buy the bike as a whole, don't break it. then when you drop your 'new' bike you'll have cases/bars/stuff for it.

the fairings should re-coup a good deal of your cost for the parts that matter (not plastics ;) )

I need a set of wheels cheap for rain tires (racing) if he does opt to part it out. : )

Just got this response from him " i  belive its a 05 or a 03 i wil have to look tomarow and yes i still have it sitting at my house" Ok it sounds like he is lost or not the original the bike was originally just shy of $5000 and this supposedly has a seized  engine, hey I could get lucky and have it be an easy fix but I already found an engine in NY from a 06 with a supposed 1200 miles for $850, so my question is how much should I offer this guy for the whole bike or should I ask him how much he's looking to get? I was thinking $1000, that way my total for a running bike would still be less than 2 grand. I would still love to get the 90 and 92 for $650 but how can I go wrong with an 04 or 05 with an almost new engine.

the 'no title' part means the price you had in mind goes down by 50%.

sure, the bits may be valuable as a parts bike, but no title means a mess, and you're better off ripping parts off for -another- gs.

2 cents

Without a title, I wont pay a cent over $500 for any bike, up to a 600cc supersport.   also kinda suggests there is some deeper issue with the bike.  Run the VIN through your law enforcement unit and see if it comes back stolen, then decide from there what to do.

Seems a little shady, he just said it has no tittle, Im from  NY where its usually a pain in the ass, long drawn out process to apply for a new title or a salvage title, I know a cop that can run the vin# but I dont know anyone in the DMV( if ya know what Im getting at). I offered him $500. I know this is wrong, but its also wrong to part out a nice bike, how hard is it to just get another tittle for around the same year and preferably the same color gs500, yes I know I should get the frame as well but its not always easy to find and then you have to put in the work to swap it in
