Title: Fuel theif
Post by: judokia on November 05, 2008, 04:11:59 PM
Over the last ouple of weeks i have had my bike attacked by fuel theives. The first time they cut the reserve pipe and drained the tank. Not to much of a problem just some new hose and then some more fuel. A hassle but no big deal. The second time they just yanked at the main fuel hose to the carburettors and managed to break the T-Peice that joins the two carbs. Has anyone got any ideas how to make the bike more secure. The fuel lines on this bike are very exposed.
Any thoughts would to greatly appreciated. :o

tape razor blades to you fuel lines, then just look for blood in the morning.

no really, after several radio thefts, a friend of mine put a 1x4 under his dash with razor blades in it.

there was a bloody mess, but only one time. ;)

theives should be SHOT.

Alarm system or a locked bike cover

You could fill you bike with diesel and leave it out as a decoy. It is probably the same people stealing from you repeatedly, so once their car has broken down because they put diesel in it, they probably won't bother you again. Another idea is to figure out an easy way to shut off your tank petcock. Chances are potential thieves wouldn't think to check it and might give up on stealing your gas, with the idea that if they can't get the gas out, they'll eventually stop targeting your bike.

A bike cover might help, but they'd probably just cut it, they already have tools to cut your fuel lines, so what would stop them from cutting the cover too? An alarm might help if you happen to be within earshot when they do it. The problem with alarms is that they are geared towards someone stealing the whole bike, so the thieves might be able to still steal your gas without disturbing the bike enough to set it off.

It sucks that people are stealing gas even when gas prices are going down. The bike only holds at most about $9.60 worth of gas at this point, it hardly seems worth stealing... Why not go steal gas from SUVs? You have to do a little more work to puncture the gas tank, but the payoff is way more...

Yeah, but will it be able to keep up while judokia is riding?

Its not unheard of around here to have people drill pinholes in tanks to steal gas.  What about setting up a video camera and getting the people charged? Here, it could be chargable as a felony.

and when that alarm goes off, grab a bat and beat 'em! i'd also say give 'em the gas too, but i'd also say throw matches at them after... that last part is optional.  :thumb:

they're stealing what 8 litres of gas?  what morons... get  a job!!!!!!

you should have a fake hose, reroute it to a hidden little tank... piss in it and leave it over night.  Hopefully it'll smell terrible by the time they go to steal from you

cant you put your bike someplace indoors?  I dont know if you live on a ground floor, second floor or what, but I'd find a way to roll it inside and lock it. no worries, no complicated/risky riggings.

Garage.

Thieves are lazy.  They go for low-hanging fruit.

Yeah thieves suck, I haven't had any steal gas but have lost spark plugs.  Get a cheapy webcam that has software that does motion detection and park in a place where it would have a great view of your bike.  If it happens again you will know what time and might even get lucky enough to get a tag with the face.  If nothing else you will know about a time that it is happening and could open/update a police report with that info and hopefully catch the bastids.

Get an extra petcock in plain view so they can just turn the handle and help themselves without breaking your bike.   NOOOOOO!

Actually, the razor blades seem to be most most fair; but then again teh crook might torch your ride if you do that.

and I thought this kind of things only happen in the country where I came from....

razor blade thing sounds good :)  just be careful NOT to cross the line.
If you piss the guy too much he may do some more damage to the bike on purpose!!

if you're going to go for camera, make sure he can see it. it is very likely that it will discourage him form stealing more of your fuel.

and last: he really is DUMB to steal $9 worth of fuel...

ohh one more: park your bike next to Hummer or some huge SUV  ;) much more fuel in them so he'll leave your bike alone  :thumb:

cheers

I've got a cure for your problem and how to find which one of your neighbors is doing it. Buy a 2 gallon can and fill it up with gas. add a 1 pound bag of sugar put it in the can and shake well.  Set it next to your bike and leave it. When you find it gone start looking for neighbors working on vehicals and just chuckle inside.
2 gallon can...10 bucks, 2 gallons of gas 5 bucks...watching a theiving neighbor push his car home....priceless.

Cut the end off an extension cord, attach one of the bare ends to the bike and the other bare end to a small piece of sheet metal.  Lay the sheet metal on the petcock side of the bike flat on the ground.  Cover/hide extension cord and plug it in.  Wait for the lights to dim.

Id say get two cameras.  One in plain view.  WIll help keep dishonest ppl honest.  The other more hidden with a shot on the other camera and the bike.  That way if they see the no so hidden one and destroy it, youve got evidence of that and the ensuing fuel theft.  Use said evidence to your liking.  DO what you must to protect your property.

Mythbusters busted sugar in the tank a long time ago, now if you really want to ruin engines you want bleach. It causes tanks, carbs, injectors and heads to rust overnight.

Yeah, good in theory, but he doesn't want his tank to rust overnight...
