Title: Exhaust cough rolling off the throttle
Post by: reminor on November 12, 2008, 08:23:12 AM
All of the sudden my bike started that funny soft pop when I get off the throttle. It happens at any speed, and not too often and I cannot figure out the pattern. I rejetted 2 seasons ago (40/127, 1 washer, 3 turns, carbs synced, floats checked, fuel filter, treated gas tank, stock exhaust and air filter) and it's been working like a charm.

It is not a loud POP or shot similar to when you are lean. It is more like a cough, so funny I laugh every time I hear it. Still runs great, just that ridiculous fart. It's not the old gas as I was riding regularly up to two days ago. No changes or modifications were done recently.

Am I lean? Advance ignition to blame? Any ideas?

P.S. It is a 1999 with under 10k miles on it.

So yeah advice please!!!!!

What's your exhaust like? I had the same problem on my GN. It was from some small holes in the exhaust from corrosion. Replaced the exhaust and now it's all good.

Check your exhaust flange at the motor i know with headers if they get any leaks the cold air that gets sucked through the smallest of holes makes like a crackle sound and that kinda sounds like what your describing.  Let me know if this sounds right or not please.

UPDATE. Looks like I found the answer to the mistery I've been having. Recently I opened up my carbs for checkup and found one pilot jet (I run #40) was completely blocked with buildup. After I cleaned the jet up (had to use a guitar string) I had a chance to ride today. No more pop!!  :thumb:
