Post by: ashman on September 16, 2003, 01:18:13 AM
Hey,
Been poking around the site some but my first post. Got a 93' GS about 3 months ago. I"ve been wondering, is their a helmet lock somewhere??? Cuz I must be blind or I dont have one. Also w/ Fall coming soon I'm in need of a good riding jacket in the 150-200 dollar range. I know their are some good suggestions out there, send them my way.  93' GS 12k miles any maintance I should be looking forward to soon? And thats it for now.
Thanks,
Ash

Hey, and welcome to the board.

The helmet lock can be found under the seat.  It consists of two hooks - One on either side.  It's the standard loop the D-ring from your helmet strap onto it and latch the seat.

Check the link on the main page for maintenance schedule.

Hey, welcome to the site nd good luck with the bike...you'll love it!

In that price category, there are a lot of jackets.  Off the top of my head, look at the Joe Rocket Reflex.  Waterproof, thicker overlays on shoulders, removeable body armour, polartec vest removeable lining, velcro at hips, wrists, and waist..lots of pockets too.  Nice.

check out www.maonline.com and you'll see plenty.

Welcome!

try www.newenough.com for great deals on jackets...esp their closeout section.

to access the helmet lock you remove the seat and you'll see the hooks on either side. to lock you slip you d-ring over hook and put seat back on.

check my site out for more info on the gs500...

On the left hand side below the seat there is a lock. Be sure not to have anything on the seat when you try to unlock it because it won't be able to spring up. Sometimes, I have to give a slight push downwards on the seat when I turn the key if something is catching (I think I need to lube the cable). First, remove the seat and you will see a D-ring hook on each side. Next, place your helmet's D-ring on the hook.  Last, just place the seat back on and push down on the seat firmly to lock. Voila! Your helmet is locked.

As far as fall jackets go I personally have and would recommend the Belstaff Zodiac jacket: water resistant, CE armour, adjustable zippered vents (4 total), and only $115 at http://www.imotorcyclestore.com/html/Street/belstaff/jackets/zodiac.html (not a closeout --> can return). They do not have a picture of the color Black/Gunmetal, but this is the one I purchased (e-mail or PM me for pics).

Joe Rocket has new textile jackets that look really good and easily fit your budget (i.e. Rio, Phoenix 3.0, Alter Ego). Check these websites for pics and info:

http://www.motoxoutlet.com/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=270&1=272&2=1085 (click on pic for closeup)

Also, check this previous post on jackets/helmets:
http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=34545&highlight=#34545

If possible try the jacket(s) on locally for fit OR check return policy and restock/exchange fees before purchasing online (in case it does not fit or you don't like it) so you can return/exchang it.

Good luck shopping :)

For $150-200 it's going to be hard to get a GOOD new motorcycle jacket.  You can get a Joe Rocket, but from experience and many online reviews, it will just fall apart on you, hopefully before you crash.  Mine started coming apart after 3 months.  The pants haven't started coming apart yet, but the elastic (suspenders) is completely wasted already and they're only 8 months old.

I'd recommend cruising eBay for a good, almost-new leather jacket, or searching for closeout deals on something better than a Joe Crappit if I were you.

Hey All,
Alright found that helmet lock. It's a different set up then I've seen before. So for jackets, what about HJC, the Replica leather jacket doesnt look so bad for 219.00.
Thanks Double,
ash

Check out www.dragginjeans.com for jackets. They have sales on "seconds" often. Usually the only thing wrong is a crooked stitch or something. It's a small company run by bikers - Love their stuff.

So long ago it seems this thread was my very 1st post. Now close to 2 years later the GS now has around 22k on it and is needing some serious attention.
My fork seals are shot, it has a slow oil leak coming from somewhere up front, a turn signal is held on w/ wire, still havnt done a valve job, need a new clutch cable and lever, put on the old drag bars when I bent my stock ones up in a accident, plus a white front rim and a black back.
I think that about covers it.

But I'm broke and cant afford these but the GS still gets me around town w/o complaints. No long dist. trips in her current condition. Been cross country and all over the gulf coast and always starts right up. What a good 1st bike, wish I had the cash to get it in better shape.

This is my 500th post, here is to 500 more.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Fieldsheer jackets. They make awesome summer (and/or Texas) jackets, and I have no doubt their winter/fall ones are of lesser quality. They are also fairly affordable if you can find them online (check eBay).

Lol, not a fan of Joe Rocket I see.   Though I dont' have any of their pants yet.... I know that elastic wearing out is a general issue with boxers, panties, and other clothing that have elastic waistbands.  JR makes a rasp jacket (which i own) that sells for ~$175 or so.  I've only had it a month, but no signs of coming apart yet.  Their mesh jackets/pants do look a tad flimsy to me, though.

Personally, I like the Teknic Lightning

http://www.newenough.com/teknic_lightning_jacket_page.htm

I have a red and a blue one. I've heard they're tough, and they're $100. It won't help with rain, but it'll keep you warm and safe. Get a poncho over, and you're ready for whatever.

It looks good with the bike too, IMHO

IMO, Joe Rocket jackets don't offer enough protection. They are only padded, and I think that CE armor is VERY important. JR has a good marketing team, I guess.

I've crash tested the teknic dual foam and it held up great. the problem with the JR crap is the materials that hold everything together fail during the crashes so that the armor can't do it's job.
