Title: Bike won't stay on, must be kept above 3000 revs!
Post by: jhon123 on November 25, 2008, 08:22:43 PM
I'm having a problem with my bike and I can't seem to figure out how to solve it.

I've been riding my bike at least a few times a week for the past few months and haven't had a problem.

A few days ago, it was freezing outside, but I got the bike to start. (I've read that the gs is a cold bastard, so I gave it a few tries). Once I got it started the bike would just turn off (even with the choke on) unless I kept on giving it gas.

I initially thought it was a problem with the cold, so I just rode it as it was for about a half and hour, all the while keeping the revs above 3000.

Even after the bike was sufficiently warmed up, it would not stay on neutral and would just turn off.

I thought that maybe the revs were set too low (1200 in the summer) so I adjusted the idle screw (only once I had ridden it for about a half an hour).

The bike would stay on neutral if I set the idle screw for above 3000 rev's.  If I tried to lower the revs to a more normal speed, the bike would turn off almost immediately after it would cross the 3000 rev line.

I had a similar problem once and posted about it on the site.

In the end it turned out to be that the air vent hose (coming from the air box) was bent and wasn't allowing any excess fuel to leak out, thereby causing the air box to be flooded with gas.

After straightening out the vent hose (and getting a gallon of fuel poured on me) the bike ran perfectly

This time I checked the obvious things (gas, battery, fuel) everything seems to be fine, so I'm looking for any leads someone can offer.

Thanks a lot

Valve clearance?
You mentioned it's freezing out...any rapid heating/cooling of the engine lately?

Thanks for the info about the air vent hose. Always nice to read about solutions  :)

could be electrical. one of the cylinders could cut out, causing it to die. then you rev up to 3,000 ,and the leads are jiggled just enough to make contact and fire both jugs. it's  a long shot, but possible.

check your plugs. dump your bowls. fresh gas. run on prime.

ps - oh and sorry, it sounds like your idler jet is clogged. >3000 means the main jet is used, or right about >3000 rpm anyway. :)

I changed my plugs last night, checked oil levels, and no difference, the bike starts immediately but just as quickly turns off.(unless I keep giving it gas)

It seems as if the engine is gasping for air, the air filter is a bit dirty but I just don't understand why the bike just suddenly freaked out. (the air vent hose is not blocked this time, so no luck)

anybody have any ideas?  I ride it every other day in the city and really need it to get around.

To "ohgood", is there any way I can unclog the idle jet without taking the bike apart?

Half a bottle of carb cleaner might help but if no fuel is passing through your pilot jet very little carb cleaner would make it there. The only 100% solution I can think of is pull the jet and let it soak. Hope this helps.
