Post by: socialDK on December 04, 2008, 11:34:05 PM
What are some movies you think people should see that are not big pieces of hollywood crap? What should we avoid? I like b/cult movies.
Everyone should see
   The Evil Dead trilogy
   Re-animator  trilogy
   Bubba Ho-Tep

I just saw "Hancock" amazing pile of $h!t

o and awesome TV shows.
"Freaks and Geeks"
  "Spaced"

Bubba Ho-Tep is freaking GREAT!  You have to kind of suspend your disbelief a bit and just enjoy that the 2 main characters actually believe they are who they say they are (Elvis & JFK living in a nursing home).  It's a really fun movie!

One of my favorites is an obscure documentary, "Vernon, Florida".  You can get it on Netflix.  It's about an hour long, and it's about half a dozen residents of a small, rural Florida town.  The "main" character is an avid turkey hunter & is just a bit obsessive about turkeys.  But if you are a people watcher, it's a must-see!

one of the worst piles of excrement i have seen this year was "the happening"
pointless,pointless,pointless-
but, i have to give mknightshymallalaain (whatever) the gold star for discovering that all you need for "special effects"
is to go out to a f**kn pasture when the wind is blowing- talk about your low oeverhead.

yeah i was glad i got to see bubba ho-tep in theaters. it was a low budget movie so there was only 1 print is the bay area that got passed around. its one of the most original movies ive seen in years. they believe they are who they say they are. and elvis talking about the "growth on his pecker" was great. the "vernon, florida" sound interesting ill have to see that.

Yama, did you actually WATCH Fahrenheit 911?  Beginning to end?  I did, and it's one of the only times I have even seen an theater audience (including me) stand and applaud at the end of a movie.

Any documentary takes a point of view.  Any and every documentary ever made.  This one presented lies and distortions and showed them for what they are.  It showed the result (American soldiers dying) as well.  It presented possible motives (greed and profit) for the lies and distortions.

We STILL have Americans dying almost every day in Iraq and we will until we have the sense to bring them home.  Hopefully Obama has the sense to do that and hopefully he can see the exact same thing happening in Afghanistan and bring them home as well.

Some of you are uncomfortable with the basic fact that Bush and Cheney lied us into a war.  They did; it's history.  They will claim "bad intelligence" until they die, but they chose what intelligence to believe (and in some cases to fabricate).  Michael Moore didn't like it and he made a movie about it.

I have not yet had a chance to see Sicko (I live in the reddest state in the Union and it never showed in my town).  I need to buy the DVD.
/threadjack off

I haven't seen a current movie this year, mainly because I am a curmudgeon enough to expect that I should be able to watch a movie without having to listen to people in the theater talking to each other or talking on their cell phone in a conversational voice while the movie is playing.  Is that only a (redneck) regional problem or does that happen in bigger cities as well?

I don't know if An did, but I sure as hell did.  You're correct in the fact that a documentary is always spoken from a single person's point of view and that point of view is ALWAYS biased.  F9/11 is a documentary spoken from the point of view of an almost ludicrously biased person who bases his bias on issues that are vague at best.

It's a good idea to investigate everyone's view and not base your own on those of a lunatic.

Also you might want to look into some history...we were lied into EVERY war.  We've never entered or exited a war sans deceit.

I was applauding that the movie was over. :dunno_white:   His movies are preaching to the converted. Those that watch his movies or read his books think he is the greatest the rest of us cant stand him. People talk in theaters everywhere. Its the type of people not area. I think.

actually TG i did. im not close minded like some people are. i watch before i Buddha Loves You. many things in that film were taken outr of context and used for his, POV, i wont say propagsanda, to me thats a bit harsh. No president, not even your precious never can do wrong obama, can prove or disprove the info provided by the cia. it may have been faulty, some WMD material was found, albeit a bit late, but then again. meh its liek preaching to the choir, anyhoo enough threadjacking , i dont want to ruin this thread, TG if you wish pm me and we can discuss further. ( in fact i ask you to do this. id liek to get your points of view, and discuss this in detail) i await your pm [/threadjack for good]

I was looking forward to seeing the crystal skull...then southpark said there was aliens in it...which I confirmed...now there's absolutely no way I'll ever see it.

Lady in the Water was AWESOME!  Absolutely one of the funniest movies.

I still want to see Dark Knight.  It's Batman...it's going to be corny...

For the sake of adding something, though:  Juno rocked
Title: Re: This Movie Sucks
Post by: wladziu on December 08, 2008, 10:27:15 AM
Dark Knight wasn't corny.  It was more like being constipated:  waiting a really long time for something to happen, then being let down when something finally does.

Oh!  That oil drilling movie!   WTF!!?!?!?!   "I GAVE AWAY MY CHILD!"  WTF!!
Title: Re: This Movie Sucks
Post by: Roadstergal on December 08, 2008, 05:50:28 PM
Juno rocked.

No Country For Old Men was actually less disturbing than the book, IMO, but a good flick.

I just saw Milk in the Castro.  The only place to see it.     Good flick.

Not exactly a movie, but the best sci-fi TV show ever - and a better use of time than a lot of movies - was Firefly.

A Princess Bride was, of course, classic.  And Good Morning, Vietnam.  And A Fish Called Wanda.

The Sixth Sense was decent.  Everything M. Knight has done since then has sucked.

Winged Migration is the best documentary ever, IMO.

   Re-animator  trilogy
   Bubba Ho-Tep

I actually got to see Bruce Campbell in person at the premier of his new movie "My Name is Bruce" when it came to the E-street theater in Washington DC.  It was one of the greatest moments of my life

Hellboy II was a bit disappointing after the first installation, but it was not bad by comparison to most of this years crap-fests.

Lately I have been revisiting the old movie collection and the following come out of the stack the most:

Rocky IV
300
The Crow (Brandon Lee)
Return of the Dragon (with Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris)
Idiocracy (Luke Wilson)
Zoolander
Title: Re: This Movie Sucks
Post by: makenzie71 on December 08, 2008, 06:27:11 PM
300 was so pointless...which made it irritating to watch...but I agree, older movies are better.  Ever since the theatres were hit with 8 separate Ben Stiller movies simultaneously, it's just not been the same.  I'd rather revisit the old goodies...

Idiocracy was awesome...
Fight Club...still best movie ever
Vanilla Sky...I list because I'm still not sure if this was the BEST movie ever or the second worst movie ever
Schwarzenegger flicks...Terminator's 1 and 2, True Lies, Conan, Total Recall, Predator, Eraser, etc
Stallone flicks that aren't Rocky...especially Rambo...Rambo is my hero...
Starship Troopers
Event Horizon
Dogma
Akira

I also love Dwayne Johnson movies...except Doom...if I never see Doom again I'll be okay but I didn't have to "force" myself through it or anything.

Then Vin Diesel movies...I have yet to see a bad Vin Diesel movie...

My sisiter in law and nephew got autographs and pics. Ill be going to Berkley to see "My Name Is Bruce" later this month. Im a big campbell fan.
Idiocracy was good. great idea. supertroopers one of the funniest movies ever period. Any Mel Brooks movies. Ed Wood is a league all his own except maybe John Waters. Both great movies.

All of those movies have some entertainment value and not all of them are so bad. Each had some memorable funny or tragic parts. the movies i will NEVER and I repeat NEVER see again (even if paid a million bucks) are the following:

1. Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ
2. Lolita
3. Saving Ryan's Privates...err Saving Private Ryan

Each of those have such vivid and horribly emotionally scarring effects that it's difficult to fathom I wasn't warned. hehe. Don't get me wrong, they are beautifully made and each of them has its moments, but nah, I'll pass.

Saving Private Ryan isn't fully appreciated until you experience the psychological effect of high explosives delivered against you.

I lost sleep over John Q. I came out right about the time I was diagnosed with my heart condition and told I might need a transplant. My roommate said it was a great movie and I should see it. Didn't know what it was about! Nothing like thinking that if I need a heart I will just get screwed and have to hold a doctor hostage just to get it! What the hell was my roommate thinking?!?!?!

OH will never watch Unwatchable "unbreakable I mean". It was soooo bad that I wanted a refund of the two hours of my life I just wasted.

I think I will add tonight's CSI: New York to things that shock the hell out of me. First off I'm a security officer  :police: and I have an implanted defibrillator. Well, tonight's episode featured an armoured security guard who had his pacemaker blow up in his chest! :icon_eek: OMG my eyes were like    ! Turned out to be a high tech microwave gun from DARPA that was stolen to deactivate the truck and the poor guard had his heart explode! Now I see why there's all those signs stay away from microwaves lol ( that was 20 years ago that microwaves interferred). But, can this really happen?!??!?!

Gonna have nightmares tonight and that doesn't help with surgery to get a port implanted in the morning! Can it explode to ?!?!?

This'll sound incredibly nerdy, but I'm actually pretty jealous of you.
You get a diagnostic port!!  That is too cool!!

After you get it, you should walk into an Autozone and ask them to use their diagnostic unit...  Hahahahahaha!
Maybe you could ask them to advance the timing a little, so you get a better start in the morning!    :tongue2:
Tell them it leads to your brain, and now you can't see out of one eye! Hahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!

You should call the unit manufacturers and ask them about microwaves.  They'll tell you all about it, especially if you just ask the questions you're really worried about.  They don't mind.  I'm sure they would be happy to hear from someone who's life they're helping to save.  It's an issue of shielding, that's all.

According to the UCSF Cardiology department, subjection to strong electromagnetic interference can only temporarily halt the unit.  Once you're out of the field, it'll defib you again.  You'll probably wake up with a bad headache, though.   :tongue2:

Nah, my port is just for "oil" changes. My veins are shot to oh mygoodness. It took nine times to get an IV in to put in the port go figure! But, it is  a "power" port so they can do CT scans too! Which is nice cause I gotta have one next week my urologist thinks I may have another kidney stone  . The urologist in the hospital said he physically went up to my kidney and didn't see any more. If there is I'm gonna go hunt me down a doctor!

The info on the AICD was informative. I hate going to airports to get frisked several times before boarding! And the court house was sooo bad that I had to threaten the security guard that if he took another step I'd have him charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

But, as my best friend said "i'm all borged out" in fact he saw my x-ray and you could read the serial number so he says I'm 1861 of 2000 lol. But, I'm lucky to have my "borg" implants cause I probably wouldn't be here without them!

GOMORRAH. Fascinating view of modern, unglamorized, Italian organized crime. Directing, photography and acting are phenomenal and extremely realistic, you will forget you're watching a movie. Comparable to City Of God. Highly recommended, you will thank me.

Recommended this year (haven't seen yet): Slumdog Millionaire, The Wrestler, The Hammer, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Doubt, MILK. Perhaps JCVD as well.

just a few Must-see all-time greats:

Porco Rosso - absolutely unique anime story of a flying, warfighting pig
Chopper - early Eric Bana, unrecognizable as a complex and crazy outlaw
HEAT - of course
Harsh Times - Christian Bale + LA = win
A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints - growing up street style, an actor's director movie, awesome emotional tone
Gus Van Sant - Paranoid Park, My Own Private Idaho
Band of Brothers - duh
High Art - Lesbian love tale, pitch perfect, as is Laurel Canyon, these are two untouchable movies if you like acting and people.

Foreign must-see

Anything by Werner Herzog, especially anything with Klaus Kinski. Try starting with My Best Fiend about their relationship. Crazy fockers. All phenomenal and unique, including his documentaries. Little Dieter Needs to Fly is the story that Red Dawn was based on, about a downed pilot's survival.

The 400 Blows - Truffaut, famous French New Wave director's story of his difficult coming of age.
The Tin Drum - Bizarre, heartwarming, fascinating ww2 story based on classic novel
RAN - epic samurai 'Braveheart'
The Seven Samurai - village battle classic influencing modern US greats
Turkish Delight - early Rutger Hauer
RUN LOLA RUN - Of course. If you like kickass women
La Femme Nikita - or simply 'Nikita'. French version original only, fck the rest.

Fellini's movies, don't ignore them just cause they're in black and white: 8 & 1/2, La Dolce Vita, La Strada - all timeless and eternal and rewatchable.

I think I'll stop there for now. :)
