When in first gear and i get up to 10-15mph or so and i let off the gas it wants to slow down fast and after a couple seconds dies/stalls. Even if i just ride in first gear it wnats to die/stall after a while. Also probably unrelated problem it's super hard to get in neutral, it's a half click for neutral right? Any suggestions on either problem welcome.
Where's your idle at? It should be a little over 1000rpms..............You might have some rust/dirt in the carb. Try switching the petcock to 'off' and rev the bike until it runs out, then switch the petcock to 'on' and start her up. This can blow out the rust or dirt in the carb.
As for the shifting into nuetral, check your oil level.
Checked oil a month or so ago and was fine haven't rode much since then so i imagine that's fine. And petcock is the thing that says prime on res? Idk what the petcock is lol. :dunno_white:
Idk rpms as well no tach sorry
You talking about the secondary petcock? Lmao petcock...
Does prime=off? and revving it while on prime to drain it won't take the whole tank will it?
Ah $%*&, you might have that fuel starvation problem like everybody on here has been through.
lol wtf is that?
Dunno but it's fine until i let off the gas and then it kinda slows down and dies.
ha, well it has something to do with the stock petcocks they put on these bikes. They have a vacuum hose coming from the back of the petcock and going to the carbs. You should really rip that hose off and plug it off on the carb, but for now, you wanna try getting it to idle, then putting the petcock on 'prime'(this shut off the fuel from the tank, so you'll only have the fuel in the bowls.
so put it on prime rev it til it's out (not gonna drain the tank will it?) Or do i just need to leave it on prime?

Yeah I know what you're talking about.......I had to fiddle with the idle screw to make it at least idle and then I would be on the throttle trying to rev it out.

No you won't drain the tank, you are only draining the fuel bowls in the carbs.
Ok so i drain the bowels then start it up on the "on" position to blow out any debris? It'll start back with no fuel in the bowels?
What's the conditon of the bike? was it sitting for a year or more?
no ive been riding and had this prob kinda recently.
Mostly just around my yard though don't have license yet.

It will start but not right away until fuel gets back into the bowls. So after it's ran out of fuel, try starting it with throttle fully turned, if it doesn't wanna start, give it a couple minutes and come back and try it again.
Start it on "on" right?

What year is the bike?
1995 been working on it a while mostly cosmetic stuff like turn sigs and stuff though just getting around to tough stuff.
How do you get into neutral anyway? Half a click up from 1st right?
That petcock, how it is now with the vacuum operation on, it is a fuel starvation problem. Here's some post on how to fix it.

Usually I know from my green indicator light below the speedo and tach, but if you don;t have those then yes it's a half click above 1st, and you'll know from when the bike doesn't move and it doesn't stall.
Lol know how to tell if it is in neutral but i dont think its clutch cable b/c i put my ear close to the thing and i can hear a click/clunk when i pull it in. Am i right?
Also, you should get a fuel filter if you don't have one. Do some searches.
Any other questions, feel free to PM.

It's just a little click above first gear.......I couldn't find nuetral when I first started riding either. It takes time to get used too.

i had a lot of little issues like these when i got my bike 2 years ago. I ended up checking with MOM (motorcycle owner manual) and adjusting all my cables to the specified settings and my clutch operated way better. mine seems to need adjustment pretty often, i dont remember how often its required to be checked. I also overfilled oil once and it made the bike nearly impossible to shift.
N is between 1 and 2. you can either do a little click up from 1st or a little click down from 2nd.
i pulled my carbs off last winter and poured them out. the fuel in there looked like tang with all the rust. bike ran MUCH better the spring after that.
Switched bike to prime and revved and let it sit forever but it never ran out. Did sound like it wanted to die a couple times and got pretty close but it always came right back. Made sure it was on Prime and everything idk why it wouldn't run out.
Thinking i'm gonna have to take apart petcock.
Bump anyone :)
Yes i realized i had to have a operating no-vacuum petcock working first. Sorry about that :icon_rolleyes:
What you wanna do for the petcock is to first have the handle facing up, then you want to unclip the metal bracket that holds the handle in. After you unclip the handle off, make sure the plastics center cone piece is pushed in or else fuel will spew out. Then install the handle back on, but facing down instead of up. This will block off the vacuum operation.
I did give you post on how some ppl used JB weld and that works too, but is much easier. The only thing that's different is that you now have "PRIME" for off, "RES" for reserve, and "NO"(upside down 'ON') for on.
I'll take some pics of mine and how it looks. Really easy fix.
It should look like this after:
After you do this, you have to plug the vacuum inlet on the carb, so if you decide tank off the tank, remove the air box(unless you can get your hands under the carb and install a fuel filter between the hose that's running from the carb to the petcock. GET A FUEL FILTER W/O COPPER PIECE IN CENTER. These tend to rust and fall apart.
Hell if you take off the tank and the air box, you mind as well clean the carb.
Thanks yeah was thinking i need to clean carbs anyway prob gonna do this next week and take out like 5 birds with one stone. (due for oil and air filter change as well, plus fuel filter sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the help :)
