Title: Got my Avon Road Riders, question on install. ( odd direction markings)
Post by: Danny500 on December 06, 2008, 11:35:10 PM
So, the front tire has a rotation marking opposite of that of the rear tire. If you put the tires up against one another as if they're on the bike, the treads look as if they're driving at one another... yet, that's the way the arrows point.

Basically it looks as if the front tire is supposed to be mounted backwards... what gives?

Front tires are designed to handle braking forces and rear tires to handle driving forces, water dispersion to prevent hydroplaning is also a consideration.  If mounting a front tire on the rear or a rear tire on the front most turn it around to rotate in the opposite direction.

A number of tires have been made for both front/rear application including some of the Roadriders.  They generally have two arrows in opposite directions marked for front and rear mounting.

First three pics are legit but the wheelie pic was borrowed from Cycle World and passed thru photoshop on the way to my sig pic.    Made that pic and posted it here a few years ago for a laugh.

Went over to my garage to get my battery to charge it so I snapped a couple of tire pics while there, poor quality pics in my cold, dark, non electric garage but they show tread patterns are run in opposite directions on the Roadriders when mounted according to arrows:

That Roadrider front is second only to the Lasertec front in even wearing so far, doesn't show the serious beveling and/or cupping the dozen other fronts I've tried had.  I may try a Storm sport touring radial with it when I replace the rear in the spring.

Revised my sig pic.

Ok, that makes perfect sense now that I think about it. Becuase if you were going to install the wheels opposite from their markings the rear tire would slip on acceleration and the front tire would slip on braking.

Genious. Lol.

Thanks again!
