Been riding with these bars for a month now, and all and all have been quite happy with them. They are like superbike bars without the rise. Had to adjust them a few times until i got correct pressure across the palm of my hand, but now find them very comfortable. The controls hit the tank at full lock, but the only time i even notice is in the parking deck and while putting the machine on its center stand. At first it was a little more stress on my wrists, but being 6'1 with monkey arms my body quickly adjusted. They are just as comfy as the superbike bars were.

Those... look... sweet!
If you spin them so they angle down a little further will they slap the tank?
Dan
Not sure. I know the bend is 30 degrees. I had them rotated high so only the horn/starter buttons hit the tank at full lock. It caused me to carry all the pressure on the outside of the palms of my hands. I rotated them down to the point where my body was comfy. I was recently in a crash where my tank received a dent on the right side. Im not worried about scuffing it up a little from wacking the plastic controls against it from time to time. ;)
your not going to be in full lock anyhoo alot

Maybe that's why respite has a nice divot on the right side of the tank :bs: ... And if you ever turned full right at parking lot speeds with the bike running, you will crank the starter
And you never need the steering lock ? really ...
Drag bars - That's what these are called on the street, and flanders makes 30 degrees, many of the others like bikemaster or K&N etc make 25 degree give or take ... and they are all the same way on a GS ... on a 90-00 they dont hit anything and let it lock too. Check fleabay for drag bars ... they're plenty. I have had then going back to 97 or so ... and eventually I made the 2 welds, then the 4 welds ... actually I made 4 welds first, then 2 welds, then back to 4. even so, for a 90-00 2 welds are better, 4 welds are close. If I have left over 4 welds ... the next session of welding I'd use to do 2 welds, I love those.
Cool.

Dent is from my last set of superbike bars. :flipoff: When the bike hit the ground the bars smacked the tank. It also bent the bolts that hold in the bar ends on each side which i find annoying. Both stick out at funny angles. Havent had time to dig through the hardware store to find replacements.
The way my controls are rotated neither the starter or horn make contact with the tank.
Ha ha ... joke's on me ... fine, that was a bit presumptous.
On a savage 650, the drag bars are the schnitz. 4-9inch risers, and 24-36 wide 12-15 degree bend bars ... I am trying to get a few of those going. The bars are nothing, I have SS and aluminum stock for those, getting risers made is the PITA.

So for handlebar mod...what can we go with?
89 clipons?
Buddas bar (top one in the pic)
and a Supersport bar...which one is this???
From what i read some people have issues with clipons hitting the faring on the f model gs. Those bars from the buddha seem to be very popular and are inspired by the suburban machinery bars. Suburban machinery bars are regarded as the best fit for our bikes, but are expensive. The others in question are Bikemaster (brand) superbike bars, which are similar to stock, but are a bit lower. Very cheap. I was happy with superbike bars, but as said over and over, im built like a monkey and think lower bars fit me like stock bars fit most.
My clip ons hit the tank, but not the horn or starter. I've gotten used to it. The look and riding position are more important to me than the steering lock.
Decide what is important to you.
what's the rubber band supposed to remind you to do ?
89 Clip on's need a bent outward handle tube set to clear everything on an 01+
The SM bars also hit stuff.
The 4 welds I make will not, obviously because I make them on a GS sitting in my welders shop. The 2 welds did hit stuff.
Bike master super bike bars are similar to stock but may be a hair wider and a bit lower.
The flat bar with bends is called a drag bar and bike master and flanders have them. Maybe even K&N does.
Stuff hitting other stuff is inexcusable. Imagine when you drop it what its gonna do.
I crashed 5 times before I dented the tank. That was with 89 clip on's. The design on the bars is actually very biased to protecting stuff. The bar hits first, it bends and protects the tank and frame. Same with the turn signals. I sorta copy the 89 clip on's closely in my 2 welds. The 90-00 bars are even better at saving your tank. My 89 bars bent and eventually it dinged up the tank. 90 bars clear the tank by going above them. Good design for protecting stuff, lousy for your riding. :thumb:
Cool.

When I crashed with the stock bars they left two very large dents in my tank because they rotated in the handle bar clamp. No way to avoid that with the amount of forces in a crash.
Unless you find bars that don't hit the tank at any angle they are rotated in, they can do damage in a crash.
My tank is already dented and I have a tank cover for it now so I don't really care what is going on underneath the cover anymore as far as dents/scratches go.
How hard and what sorta crash is the question. Hit it hard enough and everything can be toast.
Cool.

the yellow thing on the throttle i assume?
it's to remind you that your disc lock is still on. :)
Budda I want this:
This looks like it drops down the most...am I correct? Gives you most of the sportbike position........BUT are they closer to you?? Or farther?
The clipons Im getting from you...will be like this? What will I receive in the mail?
Do I need to put on a new plate?....I think Im confused on how it works or how its changed from stock...please explain :D

I made these, but those things didn't stay in 1 place and they were awful. They also require dropping the forks into the triples by over 1.5 inch. Sorry I dont have anything like this.
I have the 89 stock triple.

Ok I started a new topic about handlebars, check it out...I figured out what I most likely want, according to GS500Wiki
