I used the suction cup mount that came with my Mio on top of the SV tank. I tethered it to my tankbag, but I'm usng a larger tankbag now, so I'm going with some kind of Ram mount.

I prefer for my GPS screen to be slightly to my left; but if you are not so picky about that, you can get a Ram Ball with 3/8" threaded stud.  Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir and drill/tap it to receive that stud, using Loctite RED to further secrure it.  That way you can grind the excess stud off flush with inner surface of the cover -- or, if room, even reinforce it with a shallow nut.  I use this same technique on my GldWing with a Zumo 550 and have even used thae same with a big ole Garmin 2730 StreetPilot which is pretty heavy.  I have seen reservoir lids pre-fitted with Ram balls, but none for theis bike that I am aware of.  You can also get a handlebard grip mount with a Ram Ball from Garmin or probably Ram -- but our bars are fairly small in diameter.

try www.gpscity.com and search under motorcycle mounts. i prefer the mounts made by RAM. theyre high quality and not too expensive, hold up well against vibration from rushinnnngggg windddssss, and they have PLENTY of mounts to choose from. heres the one i have for my iphone.
its mounted on my handlebars in i guess whatcha call a mirror mounting hole thingy if i had the mirrors there and not on the nose i guess???
anyways...  this costed me about $25 plus $8 in shipping.... and i love it. i get all my mounts from these ppl. for my atvs, cars, and my bike.

heres an example of the tom tom one... but theres is PLENTY to pick from like i said.  this one is for a go model, i dunno what model you have but the thing i like about gpscity is if you dont like the 3" arm, you can ask them if they can switch it for whatever size you want and they try to work with you. =]
theyre great ppl. really good customer service.
no questions asked returns within 30 days

ok so if you are going to use tom tom.. your next question will be where to mount a cigarette lighter so you dont run out of juice.  grab one from radio shack they are pretty cheap. grab one with fuse already connected to the positive wire.  Anyways it is very easy to set up. I have mine just connected to the battery. it only really "turn on" if you plug something into it.  So i am not worried about trying to find the wire that is connected to the switch that turns on the bike.  When i stop. i have to unplug the tom tom anyway as i dont trust it to stay on my bike just left out.  But there could always be a time when some creep will actually use your lighter to fire up his smoke..when your bike is parked at a garage while you are at work.  if he has the other part of it.. :) ... i think i will take that chance.

Anyway.. my thoughts in this area of placement..
pros: no worries on water does not get in. Easy access. Look clean.

cons: the vibration sometimes causes my cord do move up some and not make a connection. i just have to put my hands down on it .. when riding for about an hour. this can happen once or twice or thrice. i dont remember. i learned to just press on it now and then just in case.  2. an addict smoke may actually use it.

i may make the hole bigger and put rubber around the hole to aborb the vibration. but right now..

Here are picture of where i put my DC 12volt.

and another view.

oh and pay no attention to that small switch below the lighter...   its just for THIS>>>>>>>>>>>>

Actually you'd be surprised how many states don't even have specific laws regarding underlights... And then some have close to 3 pages worth of laws :cookoo:

I found one at walmart that is water proof and has a spring loaded cover that closes when nothing is plugged in.

here are some pics of where I mounted it.

youre allowed to have yellow and amber only while driving.
if you have any othre color while driving youll get a ticket. BUT it doesnt say you cant have them on your bike.
the catchis that you bike has to be parked to display the lights. =\
dumbbbbbbbest rule everrrr. lol

Title: cheap gps -
Post by: ohgood on December 22, 2008, 05:54:18 AM
Just a heads up:

I bought a cheap-o tomtom 125 yesterday, and the total was $145. After I got home, I checked online, and sure enough, bestbuy is now seling the 125 for $99, AND you get a $10 bestbuy giftcard as a bonus.

Sooooooooo, you get the tomtom 125 for $107 out the door, and a $10 gift card to spend on a 4gb thumb drive or whatever.

FYI - the 125 comes with the charger, suction mount (looks like a good one) , and i used it yesterday for a few hours running around. it was right 99.9% of the time, has a BIG speaker that you can hear on the bike at below 50 mph, and has a pc connect (usb) so you can create POI, and share them.

I thought i wanted a waterproof gps forever, until i realized the more i spent the faster i would drop it/lose it ;)

2 cents :)
