Title: 2004 GS500 won't start
Post by: rmbudd500 on December 17, 2008, 10:22:56 PM
Hey, I have an issue with my 04 GS500 and need the forums help.

I started the bike one morning and a little puff of smoke came off the gas valve (On/Pri/Reserve). I tried it again and it started. I then warmed it up for a few minutes but I still had to rev the bike to keep from stalling. I rode for a couple miles and then at a light the bike stalled out. I could not get it started and had to roll it off to a gas station. I attempted to start it for an hour and could hear the ignition working fine, but the engine would not turnover and the carburator flooded as I gave it throttle to get started. Any idea what is wrong?
Summary:
Puff of smoke
Low RPMs/stall even after choking
Bike won't start

Would really appreciate some help.

Thanks!

i usually don't look at my petcock (hellllo pun!) while starting my bike, so let's assume you weren't either. let's also assume that puff of smoke came from somewhere around the petcock, and not the petcock. now, what's close to it that would cause problems...

ok, add a little morning breeze, and HELLO COILS ! maybe you had just enough connection to ride a little way, then the connection ended again.

(check your electrics)

Your going to need to rule out a few things, first go buy yourself a spark tester and test each side and you crank the starter I recomend turning off the feul tank and drain the bowls for that. Is sparks is good check your air filter is clean and the path is clear. Most likley fine then check your carbs maybe remove them and give them a good clean reinstall check float hight and charge your battery and try again. If that does not work you will need to do some more in depth diagnostic work. The gs is not that complicated so finding the little bugger won't be that hard.
