My goal: Looking for a more aggressive/sportbike position, within respect to handlebars
1. GS500 Wiki: http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/Handlebars
2. Says on there "More Aggressive Position --> If you'd like a steeper angle, similar to sportbikes, then a more aggressive handlebar is for you. Clipons, either aftermarket or on the US 1989 model, as well as Suburban Machinery bars, will provide this at the expense of comfort. You'll have more weight on your wrists, and a more aggressive riding posture.
3. I'm choosing to go with the Suburban machinery bars...There are 2 types though: Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 produce a slightly more aggressive position than the Type 2's (1" lower and .466" further forward).
In the GS500 Wiki explanation, the Type 1's are installed on a GS500F (scroll down to that section and you'll see it, and attached below).....Whilst the Suburban Machinery website says only Type 2 will fit the GS500F and NOT Type 1.....Does anyone know if whether the Type 1 doesn't fit on because when turning it will hit the top ( ie. like headlight assembly plastics)?? Since it is 1/2 inch more forward
They're installed on the one in the pic, I don't get it.
4. Do you think there will be a Huge difference between Type 1 and Type 2? Or even a noticeable difference? Read: http://www.suburban-machinery.com/sv650.htm
5. Are my diagrams correct of what will happen from stock to Suburban Machinery bars?
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3076/3123265829_47e17522ec.jpg?v=0) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3285/3123270867_1d5a6fa666.jpg?v=0)
6. Willl Clubman bars (from GS500Wiki) be better for what I'm looking for?
7. Will clipon's (ie. Vortex) be better for what I'm looking for?
8. Will thse bars (Budda's bars) be like the SM's? Which ones are these called? (the ones on the top in your avatar pic?)
The SM's seem like the easiest to install....but can go with Type 1 for F model, or HAVE TO get Type 2?
SM-2 hit the tank at lock. SM-1's are prolly the same dont remmeber.
Buddha bars of your pic 2 welds hit the fairing unless you twist the levers into the right position at which point they sorta become less user friendly.
Clubman's have a 5 inch drop. They are not right, may hit stuff quite hard, unlike the previous 3 that pretty much just graze the tank/fairings.
89 with bent tubes work, Buddha 4 welds work - they are a close knock off of SM-2's with the real difference being ... these were made on a GS not on an SV. Obviously they dont hit anything ... I located and made them to clear stuff ... obviously.
Vortex or true clip on's need you to slide the tubes in 1.5 inch. Another definete no no in my book, it already dont have enough suspension travel. You stuff a GSXR shock in the back, I dont think you'd like the 1.5-2 inch shorter front end. Not even an option for you.
Pretty sure others that have other stuff will post up.
Cool.
Buddha.
1. But check out this: http://www.suburban-machinery.com/GS500F.htm
The info states type 2's installed and I see the levers were twisted a bit to allow more room
Although Im sure you seen it done or something........but on the site above doesn't hit the tank....
2. I would really want the easy installation of something like the SM's....whats required to install the 89 clipons? (ie remove top plate etc...) Are they 1. only the handlebar tubes? Or 2. are they a new top plate with clipons welded on them?
3. The bars in the top of ur avatar, these are like the SM's?
"Suburban Machinery
Type 2
The most common SM bars are the Type 2 SV650 bars. A functional work of art, these bars are constructed entirely of TIG welded stainless steel. These bars are a more modern version of the classic clubman-style bars. These can be ordered from Suburban Machinery for $144.95 plus shipping, or on eBay or various other forums such as SVRider for around $90 plus shipping. "
Curiosity: Does anyone know how to purchase them off of SVRider? I go there but its just a forum etc..
I have had sm2's, clubmans, woodcraft and vortex clip-ons. So far the woodcraft and vortex are the best feel for a more aggressive postion. Clubmans are ok but they are too far forward and when you pull them back they have an upward angle not down. the sm2s are not that low and the angle i didnt like all that much. clipons are great you and adjust the angle at which they sit so they dont hit the tank.
my sm2 bars don't touch my tank at all... i've had zero problems with them
none of my bars hit the tank at full lock. I just didnt like the riding position, I guess with stock rearsets they are fine but my rearsets are not stock so I was un comfy

Yeah.
On an 04+ ... do sm2 not hit the tank/fairing in a range of useable positions or in just 1 position. I know someone who had it and it did lightly hit stuff ... may have been adjustable ... but really you adjust it to your body, not to clear stuff.
VorBH - 89 clip on's actually are top plate, the 2 posts that bolt to them and the tubes that slide into those and bolt in. The first time is more work, but every thing after that is easier cos the tubes can be slid out to do anything. Swapping the clutch perch, choke cable etc, you can slide out the inside end of the tubes and get them out. Its 5 pieces and its got like 10 bolts ... they all make a beautiful setup, like it was made for it, cos in a way, it was.
Cool.

Can clip-ons like these:
Go UNDER the plates like these:
is the stanchion/fork tube 37mm? Or is the top of the tube only 37mm?
Also, anyone have pics of clubman bars on their gs500F? or E model as well
How do the exactly fit? Like any of these?:

sm 2 bars are nice but the ones budda are making would be better because they are made to fit the bike plus youll save 100.00 bucks craftierod
i'm also lookin for some bars like VorBH posted up, someone point me in the right direction.......................
1. I think the clubmans could workout with some mods to the bars
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3441/3181061742_32933f8601.jpg?v=0)
Cutoff some tubing...
Could I also bend the grip tubes up a bit? or closer? depending on modding the feeling
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3495/3180223795_a524401673.jpg?v=0)
I just think clubmans might be too far....the center width of the bar looks unnecessarily too wide (could cut and re-weld? kinda extreme)
Drag bars quick Photoshop:

What do you guys think? I think now its either 89clipons or dragbars...unless Budda makes something good, but I need bigger pics of his bars..
Buddha bars are cool. I have a set of the 2 weld kind on my '94 and they're great.
Hey fred Do you have a pic?

Hey all I've got a 92 E that I'm running woodman clubmans that i pulled off my old 400/4 Honda. They fit ok with no rubber caps over the forktube ends ,limited angle adjustabilty but no interference problems. I am 6'2" with long arms /torso and even so the bars are a long way out there . I have ridden in this position for years so I'm used to it but do have tingling hands on long rides. my eventual solution is to get some ov the vortech pullback risers which will give me more angle adjustability and bring the bars a little bit closer to me which my hands will like. With the stock footpeg positions and this bar setup you have a nice low torso aspect but ,for me anyways, are still centered and balenced over the pegs.
duck
at some point I'll try to post pics

Wow they look exactly like SM2's!! I want those!!
Budda, are they farther than the stock handlebars? And obviously they are 0 rise on them
Are these the ones in the top of ur avatar pic? When can we gettem'..
Buddah are these the bars we spoke of? Def let me know when you get some made up. Fred.... where did you get the mirrors to fit Buddahs 2 weld bars? What diameter are they, 7/8th? Thanks -Josh

Yeah, they are 7/8" CRG Hindsight LS mirrors. I like them much better than the stock mirrors...
These are 2 welds. Fit 90-00 like a glove. 4 welds are what will fit an 01+. Sorry I put some pics up earlier. I'll find that thread. 1 min.
Cool.

Yeah, but he spelled it wrong, does that still count?
That thread I linked to had it spelled right.
I dunno I am working on covering my tracks - what for - dunno, cos we broke a house rent lease in TX wifey was concerned the clowns will try to stick a colelctor on me. However some other clowns did stick a collector on me and I threatened them with a lawsuit. They promptly vanished. Maybe the threat is faded now. However I am too used to being buddha. So I'm staying buddha.
So change it JHoffy8 or I'll quon you.
Cool.

Not sure what quon you means but it doesn't sound good!
Budda, whats the difference between the 2 welds and 4 welds?
The 4 wleds look wider and farther....the 2 welds look narrower
They look perfect for an easy upgrade to more sport bars, wow im so excited...When can we gettem'??
My apologies to the Buddah. I should know better. I will quon myself. Great reference. Giddyup!
As kramer said in the very first episode ... "when a patient is being difficult they quon him"
Apparently its a medical word after he made "quon" in scrabble and seinfeld challenged it.
Cool.
Buddha.
lol NEVER would have guessed that!
Has anyone tried the bikemaster dragbar. Might they have pictures? Someone did a photoshop mockup, which looks cool, but i'm not sure its to scale.
I'm thinking the dragbar would be an excellent compromise between clipons and the bikemaster superbike.
89clipons or dragbars... I have a gs500f 08 can u possibly give me a bit more info on how to aquire a set of these am in the middle of modifying and this is the best type of that style that I've been able to find, also would 3mm bar extenders be a good add on as I have a gSxr 600 rear spring which Is set a bit higher than stock?

Odd, my right side hits my tank when I turn sharply, maybe they arent stock though....
