Title: NOOB
Post by: dgsm24 on December 24, 2008, 08:40:58 AM
hey guys i just bought a 1990 gs500e for $250, there seems to have been a small fire under the gauges cause they are melted a bit, wiring is all cut up and no ignition switch or keys, my question is what years are interchangable with the 1990? can i use all the way up to the 05? Thanks pics soon!

Gauges from 89 thru 02 models would work out best.  The 04 and later F models have an electric tach, yours is driven by a cable from a camshaft.  Welcome aboard.   :thumb:

Hey there,
Yes, that is essential.
The choke lever is needed to start the bike.
Those handlebar switch assemblies are called "handlebar switch" assemblies.
Someone here on the board will likely have all that you need if you ask. And they will charge you a lot less than new parts for them.
So when are you posting photos of this project?
I hope that's all it needs. These kinds of "cheap bike" projects can end up getting much more expensive as you realize what else is needed to make it work.
Good luck,
Trwhouse

there are very very few differences between 89-2009. the tanks change shape, the carburetors change number of circuits, and the color schemes change. oh, and fairings, that is all. an electric pickup at some point for the rev counter.

there, now go buy some parts, 99.999% of them will enterchange, without even using a bfm. :)
