Title: WTB Crankcases or parts engine. CB SHaft tore up my crankcase
Post by: stormchaser on December 28, 2008, 02:11:38 PM
Hey, got a 1990 gs500. CB Shaft tore up my right side crankcase. I don't think even with yellow bearings I can fix it. Rest of engine is good 150 psi. Anyone got some good upper lower cases or want to part with a parts engine let me know.

I think Yamahon is right ... but just from academic interest - Bob Broussard posted about this once -

There is a way to put the bike back together without that balancer. Its gotta be balanced with the crank/pistons/rod and the thing shakes like crazy, but in a range of rpm in a narrow band, say 7-9K it can be very smooth. The other thing is, it will spin up incredibly quick and engine brake like you shifted down 3 gears when you shut the throttle. It needs the crank out though I think. Race bikes are typically built this way. Essentially they only need to run in the 7-9K range or even higher if you have cams, lighter valves and valve springs.
Cool.

That's what I'm planning to do if I can't get any cases. I might order some yellow bearings and see how long that will last. I hope balancing a crankshaft isn't that much. Found someone with 2005 cases for $125 but has an oil cooler. Rather have some cases without the oil cooler. Not sure if a top 1990 engine will work with a bottom 05 engine case.
