Title: Battery breather
Post by: Madbones on January 02, 2009, 03:31:34 PM
The battery breather is , obviously a battery breather .

Ive had this bike a little under two weeks - new 2008 model and after a ride yesterday the acid has come out the tube and over the exhaust so that the paint easily rubs off and has also etched into the foot brake.

Is that normal ?.

It may be normal.  See this post: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=42984.msg483010;topicseen#msg483010

I routed the hose to the left, not hanging outside the frame.  I also found that the water level in the battery was at the maximum level, if not slightly high.  So I let it evaporate below the minimum line before adding water.

It doesn't sound normal to me.

Same as in your pic Paulcet.
I thought the same thing , this is going to start rusting. Did you move all the tubes to the inside of the frame ?.
My DRZ400's tubes are inside the frame so i cant see a problem.
The bike hasnt been down on its side. I was thinking that it might have been filled to high when they unpacked it from the crate and assembled it for delivery.
How do you go about checking if its over charging. Is it just a multimeter directly on the battery and whats the normal charge rate.

There should be max/min line markings on the outside of the battery. You can use these to determine if the battery levels are set correctly.

The link provided in my previous posting gives the full details. The summary version is that the voltage across the battery terminals should be between 13.5 V and 15.5 V at 5000 rpm.
