Well, my '94 is about to roll over 87,000 miles, so the bike will keep on running for a good long time if you take care of it. I think it is more about how you are riding than how much you are riding. If you're riding at the redline every day all day long and skipping oil changes, it will die sooner. If you ride reasonably and do all the scheduled maintenance, you should be able to get a ton of miles out of it and maybe someday roll the odometer back to 0...
KBB says your 08 GS-F trade-in value is 2900 for bike in good condition. They also say expected milage on a 08 would be 3700 miles. Guess most people just don't ride much. When I bought my 97 GS500E I was riding 15-20k miles per year. It's dropped off a bit now to about 10k miles per year. My 370,000 miles of riding on 6 bikes over 24 years averages out to about 15.4k miles per year overall. I don't think you ride too much but I buy relatively inexpensive bikes and use them up and throw them away. I don't worry about resale value.

you're not riding too much, the dealership is just doing what it does: screwing consumers on trade-in so they can turn around and sell the bike for a grand more than they gave you.
I imagine this dealership will finance you, yes? buy the GSXR now while winter gets you a good deal. Put what you can down, and negotiate a payment you can hope to afford. Then sell your GS in the spring when the new rider market is at its peek.
to put things in perspective, I just saw a '99 GS go for $1800 with 4800 miles on it. 1/3 the mileage of your bike - granted, not as new, and without the body pieces that make the "f" a sales hit with newbs who want a sportbike, but that's the January market for ya.
Rabid,
Why dont you advertise it privately ?. You will probably get a little more than the dealers will offer.
Like the wet bike pic mate... :thumb:
I'm sure you could be totally experienced enough for a gixxer6 but beware i've read that it isnt simply a 1 up from the gs, i think i remember it being about 4 times faster. If anyone knows for sure, feel free to correct me
You already lost whatever resale you were worried about when you bought it. :)
GS's aren't worth a whole lot when there are 600's to be had for $4500 a year old or so.
Did I mention it sounds like you're having a blast ? RIDE THE PISS OUT OF YOUR GS, and when it's done, sell it off private and get whatever you want next. You still have plenty to learn, and there's no hurry getting there. Enjoy the ride ! :)
Trade-ins retain no value. The dealer needs margin so they can resell it. Add-ons and modifications have little to no effect on trade-in value, it is all about book value. The only way to recover some money is private sale or sell off mods and replace with stock parts.
Ride it until you find bike #2
Then track whore it. :)
I must agree, you will make more money selling off your mods separately from the bike. I learned this the hard way when I sold my GS. the purchaser wasn't interested in the exhaust, progressive springs, kat shock, bar end mirrors, etc. He would have paid the same amount without them and if anything, he would have preferred it bone stock.
