Title: Looking to rebuild my Top End.
Post by: Leprauchaun on January 06, 2009, 04:45:07 PM
I'm looking to rebuild my whole top end on my 89 gs500. I was just looking for some input on all the things I will need parts wise. I know I'll need a gasket kit, new rings, pistons, and timing chain. Is there anything I'm missing? And if anyone has prices on parts that would be great too.

The following thread shows lots of photos of a top end teardown. The thread includes some posts about the replacement parts required and their associated costs.

Replacing the timing chain requires splitting the cases. The chain is continous with no masterlink.

Fitting new pistons in old and worn cylinders is pointless, you should consider a rebore.

Would I be better of buying a used motor? I found one for 600 bucks with only 8k miles.

You can get motors cheaper than that if you are patient.

A rebuild could be better than another motor.
The top end, head and cylinders and gaskets. You bore it 1/2mm and fit new pistons and rings, and redo the head with new 3 angle valve jobs and maybe new kibblewhite valves.
If you do it right and its not hard at all, it will easily out last the original life.
Cool.

Yeah I've been itching to get the work done but life keeps getting in the way.  My goal this weekend is to have the wiring harness in, and make the decision if I"m going to send my carbs out to be cleaned or try it myself or just slap them back on and hope they are good!

Thanks,

Nick
