I didn't post pics because I'm on my phone. Will find tonight. No ADD, just a sweet deal on a certified mechanic owned, minty fresh NA 944 pushing almost 200hp with a 928 tranny and new racing clutch sittin on what have to be the cleanest cheese grater wheels in history.

oh I love the 750SS's!  And I love 944's!  I hate DME relays!  I love removable skyroofs but I HATE DME RELAYS!
Title: Re: FS: 2001 Ducati 750ss
Post by: spc on January 14, 2009, 07:53:31 AM
I've pretty well fallen for this 944, the removable roof is pretty slick, but I really like how it handles

DME relays can suck from what I hear, but not nearly as bad as an unmaintained engine popping a timing belt and bending valves.

ya i've worked on a timing belt on those  >:( they suck. but im pretty much in love with your duc. why does everyone with a nice bike for sale live so far away from canada lol
Title: Re: FS: 2001 Ducati 750ss
Post by: makenzie71 on January 14, 2009, 10:05:33 AM
The timing belt thing isn't really all that big a hassle after you've done it once...it's mostly learning how.  I suggest you do it first thing.

thehandling was crazy sharp with the 944...I loved mine to no end except that it wasn't powerful enough at times to really be competitive.  It made an amazing rally car, but all the road stuff was lacking because it just wasn't hard to make an old school Trueno (most common at the time) throw about twice the horsepower down on a chassis that was 500lbs lighter.

If you ever get a shot at it, drop in a 968 engine...almost straight bolt in...if you love the all-motor thing.  My next 944 will be a 951, though, if I ever get a chance...either that or a 944 with a 7m-GTE stabbed into the engine bay.  I love the transaxle...you can just about stick any motor in the front of the 944 and make it work.  Great stuff.

I'm about 2hrs depending on what road work is going on on 17/170.  Tell any friend you have that are looking for a bike.  I'm not in as big of a rush because I cleared enough space in the garage for it and the 944, but I'd like to put the money back in savings pretty soon.

I 'should' be picking up a 944 this Saturday :woohoo:  I'm actually going with an '88 that will need a paint job at some point but it's not bad and everything else is near mint.

Just make sure it has the Fuchs wheels.  That's all that matters.

Actually, it has the phone dial/cheese graters, and I think they look better on the 944 (no question the Fuchs are sexy as hell on 911's)

The gray one has ABS and Airbags.  and the wheels are PC'd black.....looks pretty slick with the gray.

The red one is an 84 and the grey one is an 86...no airbags on either.  I don't know when ABS came around because mine didn't have it.

87 was the first year of ABS and Airbags and the one I'm getting is an 88.

As far as unmaintained engines and inconvenient marriages between pistons and valves the 944 IS an interference engine.  The preventative maintenance is very often not done and so belt breakage is not uncommon on these are older cars.  Even if the PO gives you the records showing it being done recently I strongly encourage you to pull the top half of the timing cover to do a visual, and look for any sign of wear.  Unless you know what to feel for you probably won't be able to tell if the tension is good, but that car has an auto-tensioner so the is less of an issue than earlier models.  The inspection should take < 2 hours and is very easy to do.  Once you do it you can probably do the second time in < 1/2 hour E2E.

Good Luck with it

Graham

I GOT IT!!!!  The timing belt was checked wednesday when the clutch master and slave were replaced so I think it'll be okay if I don't check it right away.  It needs a latch on the roof adjusted, but I looked and am pretty sure I can get it working.  It also needs one dent in the driver door pulled and a quicky paint job.  The seats aren't 100%, but they aren't beat to shaZam!.  Overall the interior is pretty damn nice.  I'm out, it's time to hit the gym.

Cool your car is the 2nd generation so you will have plastic gears in the sunroof mechanism that often go bad over time.  The gears are cheap and it is not a difficult job to replace them.  They will either strip out completely, or wear to the point where they jump teeth and cause one side to be higher than the other.  If you haven't already found it yet this will be your new BFF site http://www.clarks-garage.com/.    There is a LH Nav section called Garage Shop Manual.  It has tons of DIY procedures for the car (including those sunroof adjustment).  Some good forums are http://forums.pelicanparts.com/index.php  or Rennlist (more politics there, not my favorite)

Good Luck
Graham

I'm pretty sure it is the gears that are wrong with mine. I may just buy the latches and convert it to all manual operation. This car fuckn rocks!
Title: Re: FS: 2001 Ducati 750ss
Post by: makenzie71 on January 18, 2009, 05:19:47 PM
Meh screw the manual thing...go with MKI or 924 gears.  Also go ahead and start looking for the ODO gears because they go out frequently.

I'd avoid Rennlist...it's lame.  The Pelican forum is sweet.  I built a full stainless exhaust for my 944, which included a genuine N1 muffler.  Sounded BADASS.  The dudes on Pelican thought it was slick or would comment "not what I would have done, but a great effort" type posts.  Some guy on rennlist actually threatened to shoot me over it.  It was fun.

Oh and until there are pics you're just lying to us.

Pics 2morow. The interior is pretty good aside from the seats and I have fitted covers ordered already. A local audioshop has a double din DVD/gps setup I think I'm going to put in it.

I'm still thinking about what I'm going to do about the sunroof but it's not a big deal until summer now that it's locked down.

Fitted car seats are ghetto...they'll look like garbage within a couple months.  Get a seat cover kit...I can't remember who mine came from but they're a BIG name amongst the Porschefiles.  Took an afternoon to install and looked stupendous...like stock.

I'm going to order two axle assemblies tomorrow.  Comes to a little over 200 shipped, haven't decided if I'll tackle the job myself or have my mechanic.  Time is the biggest factor.

I don't think it's goin anywhere this time of year and I'm not really pushing to sell it so it could still be around when you get settled out.

This thing is a blast to drive other than babying it a bit so I don't completely destroy the axle until I get it replaced.

The axles are really easy to do, but can take some time as the bolts are almost always full of alot of crud.  You can usually get away with an Allen socket/wrench, BUT there is a 12point tool made specifically for this job that works very well.  If you can find a Snapon, or MAC tool truck buzzing around they will have it. Probably like $15 - $20 from them.  Also remember to torque them to spec, they have a habit of backing out if not torqued in properly.  The bolts against the Tranny can be gotten with a set of vise grips if you need to (stripped) , but the ones in the trailing  are too deep to get at without either an allen or the correct tool.

Do I need to put it on jackstands or can I get away with just using ramps??  I'm thinking there's no reason the ramps won't work and it'll help keep the wheel in place.  CV should be here tomorrow, I'm hoping to do that and an oil change Sunday.........PO put 10-30 in last oil change and almost everyone I've asked suggested 20-50 :icon_rolleyes: probably pick up a set of plugs and clean out the air filter too.

SOMEONE BUY MY BIKE!!!!!

an cv axle shafts ive ever replaced you have to split the spindle from the up lower or both control arms to get the shaft out.  that means jackstands wheels off removing calipers removing disk its self removing spring then pullin the axle shafts.
Title: Re: FS: 2001 Ducati 750ss
Post by: makenzie71 on January 22, 2009, 01:11:43 PM
Yeah...I tore the whole thing apart...wheels, calipers, rotors...everything down to the shafts.  Unpossible otherwise.

10-30 is fine in the cooler weather, if all you're doing to to-and-fro'ing.  If you start beating her hard, and when it starts to get hot out, run 15-40 or 20-50.  I ran 15-40 mostly year round.

Hmmm, I could swear I saw that all you had to do was take the 12 bolts out yank the old axle out put the new in and pop the 12 bolts back in at 30 lbs/ft :dunno_white: I'll ask the guys on pelican.  Hell it'll be easier to see what I'm doing with the wheel and shaZam! out of the way so I'll probably just go out and buy some stands :icon_rolleyes:  Gotta go find this damn triple square anyway.
Title: Re: FS: 2001 Ducati 750ss
Post by: spc on February 18, 2009, 09:04:55 AM
I took the wheel off, but other than that it was just those 12 bolts.  11 came out pretty easily and the 12 one fought like hell and I ultimately popped my f%$king shoulder out of joint trying to get it out  >:(  All in all it took about 3 hours and a f%$k ton of ibuprofen.

Bike is still for sale, will consider partial trades on a variety of crazy shaZam!.

Don't really need the cash, so I'm open to all sorts of trades.  Mostly firearms and ammo.  I'd do a straight up trade for an H&K USP Tactical with original equipment or partials on all sorts of short barrel revolvers.  Interested in non AR-15 assault rifles also, think FNFAL.

I'll consider almost anything though, just let me know what you have to trade.
