Title: Oil filter cover
Post by: arj880 on January 19, 2009, 01:20:04 PM
This may sound like a very stupid question but during the oil filter change, I got all the bolts off (one bolt even came out with the stud) but the cover won't come off.  I am assuming that the cap should pop right off no?  If not, how do I get the cover off?  My guess is that the mechanic from the last change lost the spring so now it won't pop off and it feels like it welded on.

Any direction or advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks for your time.

Sometimes hitting the side of the cover with a rubber mallet helps to break it loose. It's been a rare case that it's stuck really that hard unless someone was an idiot and used rtv to seal it. Then you'll have to pry it loose.

i'm betting on RTV. why ? their oil filter didn't include the o-ring.

if you're very careful, you can put a 1/4 socket extension in one of the holes and TAP (tap is in caps to make it a distinct TAP, not HAMMER!) on it to rotate the cover a little. a little this way, a little that way, and she's free. do not hammer ! :)

may work better with the bike hot. i dunno. you should replace those studs also. don't want them vibrating out as your ride down the road !

:)
