Hi i just bought a 2005 GS500F. I live in Whiteman AFB MO and the bike is a mess. It currently has 2200 miles on it, was a repo, and have no clue what the exhaust is. The old owner sprayed the muffler flat black and its got rivets all in it. The guy who sold it to me was a registered dealer and when he got it the fuel lines were rock solid so those were replaced and thats it as far as i know. I have numerous little parts coming in to bring it back from the dead. My problem is that it needs full choke to start(20 degrees outside) and needs to sit for 5 minutes then idles at 1200rpm w/o choke.
If i slightly add throttle it kills the engine, but if i get on it it will go? The engine also does not get warm after a good amount of time. We let it sit and were able to touch the engine. Once it gets warmer out i would like to pull it apart. I have a vance and hines full exhaust coming in to replace the junk on it and will most likely put a k/n filter on it too to match. I am lost with the whole jet set up thing since i have yet to pull a bike apart? Any recommendations or help? :icon_question:
thank you
john

Welcome. You should post pictures of the stuff you're trying to identify... Rusty exhaust with a riveted heat guard on the can? Sounds like the stock exhaust to me... The GS is also notoriously cold blooded, so having to warm it up like crazy when it is really cold out sounds quite reasonable. If touching the throttle kills the bike, it could be that you've got a clogged jet in the carb. If the bike was sitting for a long while, this becomes much more likely. If you're planning to change to a K&N filter and a different exhaust, you'll have to rejet anyways, so you'll have to take the carbs apart to clean them. You could also mail them to Buddha if you're feeling lazy or intimidated by taking apart the carbs. As far a jetting recommendations, you should be able to find them quickly with a search...
yup what fred said. as far as posting pics, sign up for a photobucket account. ( theyre free. get teh link they give you which is similar ( but slightly different from this)

Yeah i'll definately get some pictures. It just snowed outside for the first time this winter, but is supposed to warm up this weekend. The old exhaust is pretty unrestricted itself and the guy i bought if from said he took out the carbs and cleaned them.... maybe just needs tuned. thanks for the replys
Without knowing a more detailed history of the bike its hard to nail down but i agree with Fred, it probably is the carbs or possibly the fuel delivery. Have you tried running the bike on the PRIME petcock setting to see if this helps or not. I have seen behavior like this when there is a kink of bend in a vacuum line, not allowing enough fuel to be pulled into the carbs with moderate throttle but opening it up more overcomes this. If Prime doesn't help then i would say clogged carbs, it doesn't take long for cheep gas to go bad and an 05 with 2200 miles wasn't ridden that much.
