Title: Lowering a gs500?
Post by: Kimberly on September 21, 2003, 04:59:11 PM
I just bought a 1993 gs500es. Does anybody know how to lower it a bit? All I need is a half inch to an inch. The guy I bought it from said that the rear shock is on it's stiffest setting. How much adjustment can I get from that? Please no suggestions on buying smaller wheels. Thanks.

You can remove some foam from the seat.

Setting the firmness of the shock wont make a huge difference but you prob want it around 4 or 5 depending on your weight.

You can also do longer dogbones out of some steel bar stock. Do a search here there is info on this and other shortening tips.

If the shock is on the "stiffest" setting, then backing off the preload to the lowest (of four?) setting will make a noticable difference in ride height.  Probably, all that you need if your current ride is a 750ES.  Also, raise the fork tubes in the clamps a 1/4 to 1/2 inch to maintain your geometry.  This is all reversible in 5 minutes, and no, your shock won't be too soft.  In fact, you can't change the spring rate with the preload adjuster.
