It's a big country, but still: the death toll is 131 and rising.  That pretty much qualifies as a national tragedy.

I hear there's strong evidence that these fires were deliberately set.   I gather the Australian PM has been referring to this as a case of mass murder.

Stay safe.

Cheers guys, the fires in Victoria are the worst ever. The toll is 173 and still climbing. There's been entire towns wiped out and so many people left without anything.

The other states are sending help, with equipment and people, the Army has been mobilised and there is a huge fund raising effort on nation wide.

The sad thing is that they believe that the fires were deliberately lit, if that is the case and the person who did it is caught, they will tried on murder charges and not manslaughter.

On the other extreme, parts of Queensland (northern Australia) have been battling floods the past week.

Not making light of the present situation and I do feel for your countries pain but if memory serves me correctly there were a few people shot a few years back and the Aussie goverment banned most guns. Do you suppose they will ban matches now or just lighters?

Even though they're trying to turn us into a nanny state I don't think they'll take our matches & lighters off us.

If they find the person who started it, he'll be in for a quite a few years of pain.
