Does anyone know why when I first start up my bike (usually with full choke) the rev gauge stays at 0 and then 5 seconds later shoots up to 3000 or whatever. It only does it at startup. I'm just trying to make sure nothing is wrong with the bike.
Thanks, Skeets

Cable lubed with grease or some thick ass crap. They need very thin lubricant with teflon etc. Goop it up with grease and it will jam up in winter.
Anyway I lube with synthetic 0W30 synthetic motor oil. Thin enough for NC.
Cool.
Buddha.
Tach is electric on F models, no cable drive.
So what can it be if its electric?
Do you mean the rpms go to 3000 but the gauge still shows 0, or that the rpms start out low then rev up to 3000 as the bike warms up?
It should go to 3K... I only leave it there for a bit, and gradually back it off to keep the idle about 2K untill its ready to run w/o choke
Okay this is exactly what happens:
Put key in
Turn on positiom
Put in nuetral
Push red thing on
Full choke
Bike starts
Now the rev thing she immediatly show that the bike is revving
But it doesn't
It stays at 0 and then about 5 seconds later it shoots up to whatever the current rpms are and is regular...
Could be a bad connection. Be VERY CAREFUL if you try to tighten the screws the plastic is quite delicate and stripped easily. On my '04 it started that way then it started during riding then it just went nuts at the time I was a very new NOOB and thought something was really wrong stopped immediately right in front of the county Jail ( I was a little scared 'cause the immates were out in the yard yellin' at the chick on a bike). My extended warranty covered it paid the $25 deductible and got a new one. It was the second one I accidentaly stripped working on the turn signal indicator diode got a little bit bigger screw and added a second washer so it would make a good connection.
sorry for the rambling but I hope it helps~
