Title: what's an oil change cost YOU ?
Post by: ohgood on February 17, 2009, 05:27:56 AM
ok, i read / participate in other forums, and have noticed several that have members advertising $100 oil changes (or close to it).

sure, they mention something about putting air in your tires too... synthetic oil... whatever...

are any of you gstwinners paying 4-5 times too much for this 20 minute servus ?
ya ?
what are you paying for that steaming pile of poo ?

(ya, i tried synthetic the last time i changed the oil. couldn't tell a difference with shifting, so i'm going back to gtx ;) )

Jug (5 quart) of wal-mart house-brand 10W40 non-energy conserving. Been a while, $10?

Filter - $4?

Becoming an oily mess - priceless.

There should be enough left in the jug to feed the beast between changes unless it has gotten really thirsty.

I have the maintainance package and the last time I took it in the cost would have been $300! Didn't cost me then but buying the package I'm sure I paid close to it. Newb mistake I know now.

I dunno...  $9 or so?

Advertising your expensive oil change.  Is that like strutting your $90 jeans around that you can buy at Wal Mart for $12.50? :embarrassed:

For the Duc: $50 (1 gallon from AMSoil, leaves a little in case she gets thirsty) for the oil+ $12 for the filter and ~ 15 minutes of my time.  oil change lasts 7-8k miles

For the Jag: 9 (yep 9) quarts GTX @ ~$4 per--- $36+ $7 filter and 1-2 hours depending on how clumsy I'm feeling and how stuck the filter is.  oil change lasts 5-6k miles

For the P-car: 6 quarts of whatever 20w50 I can find @ $4 per---$24 + $18 for the filter with the anti-drainback doohickey because porsche can't put the filter in a normal orientation :icon_rolleyes: 45 minutes  dunno how frequently this one is going to get changed.

For the MB:  8 quarts of the cheapest 15w40 money can buy ($40)+ $7 filter and 30 minutes because I don't have to jack it up.  Oil changes every 15k miles and the car likes it that way.

every 5k miles i take the car to the stealership for the routine service. oil change, tire rotation and fluid fills and complete checks of entire car front to back.  :thumb: only costs me round $40 and approx 90 minutes of my time. ohh..and free coffee!  :icon_mrgreen: i won't get into any serious money for service until 90k when the cabin air filter needs changed according to manual and the 120k service when plugs need changed.

I do it all in the garage.  Never do anything at a dealership that you can do yourself - the service folk aren't going to be riding on or driving in your vehicle, so they aren't going to be as motivated as you are to get it right.  We got a tire changer last year, and that has been a godsend; it saves us a good chunk of time and money.  It's not just the time to get to the tire change place - it's the disruption in your own schedule for working around theirs.

I do hate hate hate valve adjusts (all of our bikes are shim-under-bucket), so I'm rather happy that my two plated bikes have ridiculously long valve check intervals.

i don't mind taking my car to the dealership for service. the service dept and dealership i go to have the best customer service i've experienced. the guys turning wrenches need work to do also. but hey, that's just my opinion.

So, we've identified A FREAKING PORSCHE ( ! ) as being less expensive than having someone else change a motorcylce's oil. thats enough for me !

some people act like motorcycles are the holy grail of engines that must have the most premium of lotions, solvents, and oils. it's kinda funny to watch them justify things..... ;)

then there are the ones that wash their bike when it rains, wrench it themselves, and could give a f%$k less about paint so long as the tires are good ;)

i'm somewhere in between, haven't found my place just yet ;)

i can assure you i'll never pay a dealer to change my oil though, less there are thongs and free beer involved
