Title: gas tank for gs500e needed
Post by: dafatrman on February 18, 2009, 04:43:07 PM
Hello, everyone.  My name is John Wesley Golden aka dafatrman, and I am a new member of this fine site.  I am in need of a gas tank that will fit a gs500e.  Any color is fine, and it doesn't have to be original paint.  I just need one that is reasonably straight, and has no rust on the inside.  I have a paypal account.  Thank you.

I used to be in houston anyway, I can restore tanks to better than new, and I'll sell you one of my masterpeices. How's 150 + yours, its undented, coated inside and powdercoated outside and your tank as trade depending on if its fixable. Rust inside is OK, so is minor denting, just no dents in the seam.
Undented = slight imprefections in the metal, but nothing you'd see 10 ft away. Powdercoat can be treated like primer, you can lightly sand it, do body filler on it and paint it your favorite color. Or, run as is with stickers on top of the undent.
Cool.

Thanks, Buddha, but my tank rusted totally through on the bottom rear seams, so we shot it with .38 special hollow points and and 2 3/4 inch hollow point 12 guage slugs, so ya know...  How much outright for one? To greyghost, thanks for the warning, but my friends and I race each other through that traffic everyday.  It's fun.  Thanks guys.

Rusted through can be fixed. Shot up ... canno. Crazy texan.
How's 225 and shipping. Its powdercoated outside in red or black and coated in inside with POR 15.
Cool.

Yeah, we are a little crazy when we get bored, and the kicker is that we were SOBER.  Anyway, I really didn't think rust that bad could be repaired.  About your tank; will it rust again?  I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a gas tank today.  Na, seriously, I don't have that much right now.  I already bought a swingarm on ebay, ordered intake boots and seals from the local Suzuki dealer, and bought a new battery today.  However, the next thing on my list untill the swingarm comes in is a tank.  If don't find a better deal (like that will happen) before I get the cash, I will send you a message.  Hopefully you will still have it.  Thanks, Buddha.

It will never rust. POR15 inside = permanent rust repair. This was from the famous dirty 1/2 dozen of last year, I cut holes under the tanks, undented them, coated when they had that gaping hole so its coated to all corners to perfection - a thin brushed on type coating and all excess removed and cooked in a closed car in the sun for weeks ... Then I roughed up the 1 inch around the cut, welded the flap back in and coated that with a brush too. A coating job I charge 75 bucks. And only do it in summer.

Then outside - its sand blasted with ~40 grit abrasive powder till it has nice pock marks then its coated with red or black high gloss. Now That is on there for good too. The one thing about powder, with gasoline exposure, it gets dulled and shiny turns into matt with time. You can sand it with 400 now very lightly. And spray clear or your color of choice or do a little bondo in some of the ripples (its got some minimal ripples in 1 spot cos undenting isn't a 100% perfect job, as I found out later) Though I may do much better if I did it now, I had to make some rolling tools, then paint or clear coat. Powder coat is on there good, forever, much better than any paint or primer. Its 100% rust free under it as well, its been sand blasted and powdercoated just without any exposure in between. That on an average GS tank in a single color job costs ~$75.

Tanks rust due to various crap in the gas, as well as moisture due to humidity and of course on the outside from breaks in the paint from scrapes etc. This has been sheilded from both very good. So it wont rust - ever, till you scrape up the top or you dent it and the inside coating cracks in that spot. Then of course all bets are off.

I did smithville_flats tank too at this same time - and actually I did a better job on his, he bought a better tank from dgyver than the ones I was working with.
Didn't powdercoat his though.
Cool.

No rust.  But it has a small dent, more like a ding.  It's about the size of a pencil eraser.

$100 plus shipping.  Cool.  How do you want me to pay for it?  How much is shipping to zip code 75706?  Does it have a gas cap w/key?  I need one of those, too.  Thanks.

I don't see why shipping would be more than $20.  It has a cap but no key.  I did check the tank again, there is some rust in the tank.  If you're still interested, let me know. Paypal would be fine.  It's the email address in my first post.
