I say give the pink insulation a try & let us know if it works.  The glass fibers used in real mufflers has much thicker fibers & stands up to the abusive environment better than house insulation, but what the hey - if it's free it's, uh, well, it's free, right?
I repacked a muffler & tried using the coarsest steel wool I could get at Home Despot* & it lasted about two years.  It basically rusted & fell apart & then blew out as dust.  The steel wool that they use in real mufflers is stainless steel, so it'll survive.  I never really expended any effort to find SS wool - maybe it's easily avalable.  Worth a little search?

* that's not a misspelling
