Title: Dumped Myself Off My GS
Post by: commuterdude on February 22, 2009, 04:46:06 PM
was rounding a turn on the edge of a farm field last night around 8pm and the bike slid out from under me on some mossy ground.   Don't really know what happened.   Called my wife who called my Father in law and Brother in law....they found me standing on the path back in the woods with my helmet off and the bike upright on the kickstand running.   After a couple of hours of me rambling on  and asking the same question over and over, my Pop in law took me to the ER  where I was diagnosed with Amnesia!
Could not remember the month, a recent snow, said I worked at the job I was laid off from in '04.  The whole nine LOL!   My helmet was unmarked but it shed the visor.   Bike jacket (armored) had some ground in mud at the right shoulder/arm.   I guess I did a gainer and landed on my face.   Anyway the bike is almost undamaged that I can see.   Had just installed new seals/progressive springs/dust seals and was out checking my deer cam when this all occurred.   So wear your gear!

Wow, congratulations on wearing the gear and still having a running GS. I've dumped mine before and rather than paying for new fairings I am just converting to naked :P   Anyhow did you regain your memory or is it still coming back in pieces?

Yeah I think i'm back to normal which ain't saying much.   My left knee is pretty sore.  Not a mark on the helmet, mud, nothing.   Just banged my head on the ground hard enough to pop the visor off.   Have no recollection of the event, don't know how I got the bike picked up (I rode it about another 200 yards from where the wreck occurred), etc.   I called and spoke to 3 people within minutes of the event by cell but don't remember those conversations.

Yeow!  Not good stuff!

Good to hear you're "back to normal"

I've had a few good whacks, but the only one that ever really affected me was when I got spat off my GS playing around on the airport ramp.  I wasn't going more than 45 MPH or so when the front end shot out from under me (I was abusing it).  Next thing I remember was waking up in a crumpled up heap face-first on the ground about a hundred feet from the bike.  It couldn't have been more than a second or two, but felt like forever.  Got up, got the bike up, had to sit back down for a moment.

I got my bell rung pretty well from that.  Had the "brain itchies" for a couple weeks.  It's like your brain itches, inside your skull.  Of course, you can't scratch it!

Stay safe!

hmmm.  concusion.  no fun bro.just take it easy for a bit.  they can have a nasty habit of fuckign with your motor skills.
try sideways into a tree at 55mph plus.  no helmet.  in a car.  and you introduce your head to nothign but the tree.  That was 4.5 years ago and i still to this day have the itchies and post concusive migrains. No feelign at the wound site and memory problems that showed up about the same time.  Im 25 and my brain acts like its 75. I zone out with the whole...wtf was i doing lost feeling.  Wear your seat belt...but be sure you dont hit things sideways.  They dont do shaZam! in a lateral collision except keep your butt in place while your head and spine whip to one side or the other.

so, you hit a deer, on the way to check the deer cam ? that's what i'd blame it on.

Yeah it was just the edge of a beanfield, a dirt path.    I can remember the bike squirting out from under me, the rear wheel to the right, and planting my left foot down a la dirtbike stylee.   Evidently I picked up the bike and rode it down into the woods on the path, got off and was standing there trying to figure out how to open my deer cam so I could switch flashcards.   Hit the ground hard enough with my left shoulder and head to knock the visor off my helmet.  I  had a CAT scan which was normal so I am pretty lucky.   The gear probably saved me from being killed or worse.

No, sorry, they wanted them preserved for comparison to a very smart chimpanzee.
