Post by: joshr08 on February 23, 2009, 02:04:20 PM
OK so i have taped off and started the stripping on the rear kat wheel i bought.  I took pics of the before and i will take pics of the after and post them as soon as its all done.  Hoping to upload pics tonight sometime to should how it looks.  I used aircraft stripper and im painting the rest of the wheel with dupli-color metalcast anodized ground coat and metalcast anodized blue top coat.

I really like the way that rotor looks! Please report back how the paint holds up. I know the rotor gets super hot and I wonder if it will get hot enough to hurt the paint...

best part about this paint is that its heat resistant up to 500 degrees so i dont think i will have any problems with it.  the wheel will be this blue in the center and polished outta lip on both sides.  i think its going to look pretty sick from what i have got done so far.  it is taking me a bit longer then i thought at first but i think its going to be worth it in the long run.

Very cool. 500 degrees will probably do it...

Damn dude that looks HOT!  Might be a dumb question but will you have to treat that aluminum to keep it from yellowing?

man my polished rims become less and less unique everyday. Join the gang!!! but seriously nice work that's gonna look sweet.

That looks very very good. I like it a lot.

jrains89 - the obvious next trend is unpolished wheels. Like strip the paint off them, then rough them up so they just look like scratched up bare aluminum. They would be easier to clean too...

I'm thinking of doing something similar with mine.  Jut wondering though, you said you polished first, then taped, primed and painted; or did you just prime and paint over the old paint, and tape the rims and sand and polish...;or strip paint off the whole wheel.  Sorry for the stupid questions BTW.

Those wheels look awesome! Let us know how the paint holds up on the disc.... those things do get quite hot.

Very, very nice!  I like the shade you picked.  Now you gave me an idea.. I was thinking of stripping my wheels and getting them powder coated, but I like what you did.. AND IT'S CHEAP!  :thumb:

yeah super cheap and pretty easy you know just depends on how much time you want to put into the stripping and painting to get the look your going for.  I was going to have them polished and the centers powder coated but i got a price of over 200 bucks so for 40 buck i took the time and did them with paint myself.

How close is that blue to your bike? Will the stock weels do the same? It just really pops!

the stock blue seems to have a bit of a purple tint to it compaired to this blue on the wheels and yes the stock wheel will work the same.

Heya, I hope you might be able to help me then :)

I have this problem, since I have polished my rim aswell...

- I don“t know if I should paint the inner part of the wheel
- OR
- Should I give the polished part the last wax and make it perfect first?

Think I will paint it first, but is this the best way? :)

Yours faithfully
Shadowjens

Edit: Also, before you painted the brake disc, did you put tape on it? And does that not give some safaety issues if you do? :D

my lip on the wheel is been polished with meguiars fine-cut cleaner right now so it was ready to have a mothers polish used on it or any other polish of your choice. then i painted it.  I didnt want to do the final polish until tires are mounted so i can buff out anything that might happen while mounting. :thumb:
