Title: stripping paint from the headlight assembly?
Post by: Train on February 25, 2009, 06:40:01 AM
Hey Gurus- I just picked up the headlight assembly stuff for my rebuild of my 91. It has been spray painted black and I want to strip that off so it's back to chrome. I have zero experience with chrome or stripping paint. Any suggestions?  :dunno_white:

Chrome, really ... wowee, you strip the spray on black and its going to become chrome. How ... I have stripped them and mine all look like steel and rust.
BTW it was originally in sheietty steel grey, just like the frame.
Do all the related stuff in black. Triples, bars, dash top plate, ears etc. It looks kewl.
Cool.
Buddha.

goto autozone and get some paint stripper, like a jug of it. Bring it home, pour it in a bucket (or bowl) and set the headlight bucket in the paint stripper. Wait like 30 minutes. It should be melted off by then. Rinse, repeat until clean.

Don't get any of the paint stripper on your skin and do it outside.

Then prime and paint the bucket.

awesome, thanks guys. One more question - what do I do with the paint stripper from the bucket method after I'm done. I don't just want to pour that stuff on the ground, right?

use acetone and burn it.

your local dump should have a place to dump paint.  Dump it there.

+1 for setting it on fire when you're done. Not super environmentally friendly, but tons of fun.

ok for the record I did NOT tell him to use acetone and set it on fire. That's incredibly dangerous. Do at your own risk. I suggest just buying the paint stripping solution.

Lol, I'm a safety consultant. No worries, I'm not setting fire to anything.
