Title: Tyre Advice
Post by: platinum_black on March 04, 2009, 07:58:19 PM
Now I know that there are many many many posts about tiyres but from what I have read no one really goes into detail as to how these tyres handle in the wet, now i am looking at changing my tyres and being that i live in scotland it is wet 99.9999999999999999999% of the time so it is beneficial to me that i get a set of tyres that will work well in these conditions.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :D

Good tires for wet conditions are usually labelled as sport touring since touring guys ride all year they'll need a little more wet traction then the dedicated supersport track-type tires. The stock BT-45's are pretty decent in the rain so are michelin macadams, I'm speaking from experience, and if you really need to I've had good experience with metz lasertecs in the snow  :icon_eek:

Well, you might look at the Avon Roadriders as I put on a pair back in July '08 and with almost 7k on them through all types of weather (hot, cold, rain, snow, etc..) and they work great. They're a sport touring tire, from what the vendor told me when I bought them, they're in between a Pirelli Sport Demon and a Bridgestone BT-45. Take that for what it is, but I've been happy with them.

Wet all the time, eh?  Sounds like Buffalo!  You want tires with rain grooves.  Use a little imagination when comparing tire treads, and you'll see that some are designed to channel water away from the center of the tire and some are not.  The other day I was looking at the IRC rear.  That is an example of a HORRIBLE tread for rain.  Dunlop didn't look much better.  I think Dunlops are expensive crap and their factory is in my hometown.  I'm supposed to love them, but I don't at all.  Avon Roadriders looked much better for all weather traction, and they're not super-expensive.  Actually the Kenda 671's look pretty good too, and they're cheap.  I like cheap.  I work in the private sector.  That means I'm poor!

Avon Roadriders.  i have 18k on the front and 12k on the back.  i ride in any weather and they do fine.  that is at freeway speeds mostly.
