gotta check the seat (where all maintenance is properly recorded!) to see. i'm guessing 6-8k miles without looking at the log. :)
I just replaced the original front pads at 18000 miles. The rear ones are still good!

By the way, I know our bike is famous for squeaking rear brake. Has anyone gotten rid of it by changing pad material? If so, what brand and type?

Of course noting is going to quiet steel on steel. A good tip for quieting what seems to be pads and rotors in good condition is to avoid getting and spray cleaner or spray wax on them as you clean the bike. My last step after using such products is to clean the rotors with acetic acid based WIndex (not the regular ammonia kind!).

Squealing is caused by the
BACK of the pad vibrating against the piston. There is a black thick grease goo (Molykote M77 or equivalent) You take a small amount and put a thin layer under the shim that touches the brake pad, then smear a very small amount in a circle where the shim makes contact with the piston on the other side. Doing that has shut mine up for over a year, Permatex also makes a product called "Disc Brake Quiet", you spray it on the back of the pads and it does the same thing. :thumb:

Yeah, that stuff does work, for a while. I changed my brakes about 6 months ago and the back brakes are starting to squeal... There is plenty of pad left, I guess the anti squeal stuff I got at Autozone is all gone now. It has been raining a lot lately, perhaps that stuff was water soluble...

I used Dow Corning Molykote M77...it definitely is NOT water soluble, I haven't heard one peep since I smeared it on over a year ago.
HINT: Honda sells it...but it's still Dow Corning Molykote M77 :whisper:

I'm not interested in grease, goop, and glop, I'm interested in pads that are less prone to squeaking. I have been a motorcycle owner since 1978. I know that ALL of the products you can put behind the pads eventually wash away, even grease, and the squeak will return. Some pad compositions are less prone to squeaking than others. I've only had this bike almost a year so I haven't had a chance to experiment with the various pads that are available for it. I have a new set of pads but haven't put them on yet as my rear pads are still good, and I don't use them much. I was wondering if anyone has had good luck with a particular pad. Not for 6 months, but for 2 or 3 years. Brake pads shouldn't wear out fast on a little bike like ours. Unless you're riding like Eddie Lawson pads will last for many years.
do front brakes last 18000 miles on a bike?

Softer pads might help? I've been doing this since 1968 myself, 25+ bikes and allot of wrenching professionally/hobby on both street/track, I have seen allot of miracle cures come and go that do and don't work, the Dow Corning Molykote M77 is the
only thing I have found that does any good for any length of time, that's why I posted it. Good luck on your quest for the quiet pad, if you find one post up :thumb:
so far the only quiet pad ive found is the one thats not being used. :thumb:
