Title: All right, some recommendations for winter jacket
Post by: bombadillo on March 09, 2009, 11:14:51 AM
I'm a cheap S.O.B. and want to get a really warm jacket.  I know there are plenty of cheap a$$es out there like me and just want to save a buck.  I have had good luck with fieldsheer, cortech, and tourmaster, with a few bits and pieces from joe rocket here and there.  I'm in need of a really warm pair of gloves and pants.  I've looked at the tourmaster polar-tex and winter extreme gloves, and will probably get one of those, but for now I need a decent jacket for cold weather.  As I posted up in the rat bike ride I just took we hit all kinds of crap and need something thats warm in 30* weather or so.  Anyway, throw out what you've got or had good luck with.  Thanks!

I've got a Teknic Freestyle jacket.  Picked up on sale last season for 1/2 off and this thing is freakin awesome.  Its got an inner zipper, a membrane with snaps over that, and an outer zipper, and an insulated liner.  I'm up here in Ontario and have riden in temps as low as -3 / -5, and according to the chart I reffered to once, has an on bike windchill of -15/-25 (something like that) and I've only worn a t-shirt or a long sleeve cotton shirt under that and have been warm enough for ridin around town.

This one?

I'm asking because they don't describe it as a cool weather jacket in this review.  I'm also looking for a VERY warm jacket for a spring trip to Colorado.  Morning temps in the 30F range.  It would be cool if this works at that temp range.

ya, thats the one I have.  I find it adequate enough for cool weather.  It was 0* C here today and was riding around fine with a cotton long sleeve under it.  I should also state I'm the hot blooded type that walks around in sub-zero temps with a spring jacket.  But for what its worth... I think this jacket is very warm compared to leather jackets.

Find a Teknic Monsoon on eBay. Teknic Freeway is another really good one. The Sprint is a good one but can't remember who makes it, might be Teknic. Hope these point you in the right direction. Look for anything 2/3 or 3/4 length.

I have a Dri-Rider Summit 2 Jacket, i picked mine up on sale for AUD$230, i don't know if dri rider is available in the states but this jacket is extremely warm and has a removable thermal liner so it can be used on warmer days. It has back and arm vents to get some air through on warmer days and it waterproof. I have got it pretty wet and haven't felt a drop on my skin with the pants as well.
