I passed my test yesterday and went out for a drive last night on my gs and after a half hr i ended up on an empty stretch of dual carraigeway, so i thought why not test her out, my word i was shocked at how easy she got up to 100mph and i stopped there as it was a little too windy for that kind of horse play lol, (that and i bottled out lol) but what is the maximum you have had out of your GS?
Fastest I've had it was 95. That was late at night, on a toll bridge that never gets used (so no traffic whatsoever). There's no way I'd ride it like that with cages around. At 95 I crested the top hump of the bridge and got hit with a strong crosswind...that was enough to immediately make me take it back down to 60.
Now, that was when it was still a stock F model. Now that it's completely naked, the fastest I've had it was between 75 and 80.
*edit*
Wait...Glasgow? Are you talking mph or kph? (I'm assuming Euro GSs would have kph speedometers.)
i see 140 KMH but beacuse of my rear tire and rear shock dont give me a chance i feel like that i will take off :cookoo: :)
yeah im talking mph the uk dont use kmh
No we have MPH In the Uk , Which Glasgow is in Scotland is in the uk , Ive seen mine go off the clock past 130
My bone-stock 1991 E model topped out at 180kph indicated, into a slight crosswind. Since it reads about 5-7% high, figure that's around 165-170kph true which is about 102-105mph. That agrees with all the other experience we've seen in magazine tests and in the forum. F models will be a bit faster on the top end due to aerodynamics. Maybe another 5-10mph?
I've only done that on two occasions, on deserted roads that lead to no-where. I don't feel the need to do that again.
I've had my girl around around the 115-120mph mark with a tail wind.
I have seen little over 190Km/h (118 miles/h)
Then there are times it can't go over 160 (100m/h).. :dunno_white:
Mine's naked, and with a slight headwind on flat road I got her to 111mph. 130 isn't possible with a stock engine unless you're going downhill.
What does "bottled out" mean?
I've seen somewhere between 110 and 115 indicated (I'm not looking to carefully at that point), but I probably had a slight downhill grade. The bike usually doesn't want to go over 105 indicated.
This is with a 2006 F model, so apparently the aerodynamics don't help much.
As long as I can hit a true 100mph every once and awhile I'm happy. I should take my GPS out some time and see what the top speed actually is.
I think he was using it to say he ran out of road?
My old GS I had up to 108 before I let off. My new GS doesn't run but I think I got it up to about 5 pushing it!
so far 90mph on a naked '93 across a long bridge.......that was pretty intense for me lol
When I had my '01 I hit 107mph shown on my GPS. Its still the top speed recorded on it because I haven't really used it on my new bike though I have hit 120 or so on several occasions, in safe areas with no traffic and good road.
I've only been up to about 90 indicated. I commute in Los Angeles though, most of the time there is so much traffic I'm just lane splitting at 35 the whole way... It is still faster than driving though.
I live in Colorado so the altitude reduces max speed (and power for that matter). The best I've done is about 95 mph. I just put on a 15 tooth front sprocket so I'll have to give it another try. Only with no cars around!

At higher speeds, tire pressure becomes way more noticeable. At freeway speed, i can easily tell when the tires are a few pounds low just by the way it feels. If you make sure your tire pressure is right, it will feel a whole lot better.
no it was the road i was on. horrible michigan roads
190km/h indicated

185 km/h - Things go past awful quick, once it hit that i back off.. and haven't gone anywhere as ridiculously fast since. Curiosity made this cat soil himself.
Each June here in Terre Haute, Indiana, we have our "Mayor's Ride" to benefit our humane society. The ride is a police escorted tour around the town. The majority of the ride is tame; first and second gear max. However, we are rewarded late in the ride with a blast down our local international airport's main landing strip.
No speed limit. :icon_twisted:
I've had my '99 GS up to an indicated 125. All out. Tucked. Ev'rything she's got cap'n. I'll leave it to you all to correct the speedometer and guess how fast I was actually going, but it seemed pretty fast to me.
This year should be even more interesting on the SV. 8)
120 on a decline road, no wind really either way. Speaking of wind, when I rode down to San Jose and back I took a trip over the Benecia bridge...never again. Side winds about took me off the bike and had me swerving all the way across.

I live in Corpus Christi, Texas. Down here the wind has been so bad lately it almost pushed one of my buddies into oncomming traffic. I think im a pro at handling wind now lol. I have gotten to 95 to pass a car. Stopped cause I didnt have to go any faster.
130 indicated, it was all out in 5th gear, with tuck so about 117 in real life but, you could feel it was not very stable. Any sort of turn could spell disaster.
i was spilting lanes at 120mph kinda late night people probaly crap there pants :D

well, kinda, but not really. it's possible to use the gear ratio to your advantage, and actually go faster. you're fighting wind resistance, and the gearing. one can help over power the other. ;)
cool thing is you don't have to re-calibrate your speedometer :)
125mph indicated. I can't wait to try it again with the GPS.
My top speed is classified information... I want to keep my licence!
However, I have seen a GS do over 100mph, and the person who was riding it reckoned it could have gone faster.

i dont doubt that it could have kept going cause when i got to 100 it was still accelerating quite quickly, well quicker than u would have thought anyway.
I've got the slowest top speed. 55mph ftw! Well, it'll go a lot faster but I'm new on a bike and 55 is just fine and dandy for me. I'd also like to live to see my son grow up.

ah yes but to pass your test over here you have to do nationaly speed limit on a dual carraigeway or country road and i got the dual carraigeway so i had to do 70mph

Eh, no hurry. It took me a while to work up to freeways and much longer to get comfortable with them. Nothing wrong with taking it slow.

You'd be right if the bike was red line limited but I beleive since it is drag limited, getting more torque from the new sprocket should make me go faster! I htink that's right.
i've had mine up to 160k/hr (100mph) but it might have got higher than that before i put the 14T front sprocket in...
I got up to 98 once going to St. Augustine on I-95. Was following a friend in a SUV didn't think to say hey if you plan on going 100 in a cage give me the directions so I could get there in one piece. So, all of sudden were going 76 no prob but up and up. Nasty cross wind so I sped up to get around to have them pull over. They were like waving and such. Then I realized they didn't know any hand signals. Pointed to the gas tank she finally pulled over 20min later. Thank goodness it wasn't gas for me. So, I told her that 95 on an interstate with cross winds was a bit scary. She was like I didn't even feel a wind. You're in a SUV duh!
I do 85 on the Turn Pike without much issue. I will lean over on the tank pack and that is pretty comfy.
Mary
I got it up to 125/130MPH I was racing a honda on the 10 freeway through traffic, I won.
hahha
Only thing is it gets squirly as f%$k going that fast... :icon_eek:
Maxed out at 117MPH tucked down behind the fairing on my GS500F on a steep descent on a German Autobahn. Speedo was showing way higher but that was what TomTom GPS said I reached.

On a steep decent, your GPS speed will be reading low. It only tracks speed over ground assuming the earth is totally flat, if you're on a hill, you will be covering less ground relative to the flat sphere GPS speed assumes...
If a GPS knows your altitude, would it not take that into account when calculating speed?
But, not grade; either way the difference is minimal. 115mph for myself.
I only weigh bout 140 so I don't add much weight to the payload. I think my speedo is off about 10mph I think that I was really only going 115/120. :thumb:
Not 10mph, 10%. So if you were doing 125 indicated (which I find hard to believe) you were doing about 112mph.
118mph-120mph lane splitting rush hour traffic.. It was an emergency. (disclaimer: rush hour here isnt as bad as lets say LA or NY. Its still bad though. It was stupid so please no flaming)

GPS altitude is typically really inaccurate to the tune of +/-200 feet or more. The GPS satellite network is geared towards latitude and longitude calculation, not altitude. Some high end GPS receivers also contain barometric sensors to get better altitude readings, but there aren't any I know of that use the barometric reading as part of speed calculation...
I have a 2005 GS500F I have had it up to 100mph a few times, it takes a while to get there. I bought it new, I asked the guy at the shop if it would go 100mph when I picked it up. He said it would and it did on the ride home from Santa Rosa Ca. to Sonoma. It seems like it might go a little faster but I never have. In 5 years I have only replaced the battery and chain. Plus regular maintenance. Over 15,000 miles now. These are Great bikes! I might hop it up a bit when I have to replace or rebuild worn out parts.
2:02 at Infineon raceway, on a stock engine.
There are only three types of top speeds that matter: lap times, trap times, and salt times. Finding your top speed on the street is insane.
Edit: You get a free pass if you do it on the Autobahn. :)
Only about 90mph. I'm still a beginner rider and my bike is a naked E model, so that's about the point where things felt a little lees in-control.
105mph indicated, so probably 95-97mph on a highway with no traffic. Not sure it would do much more without some gravitational help!
3 mph. Pushing it in and out of my garage.
Hit 100 on I-95 for the first time last Saturday. 92-95 if the speedo has what seems to be a common issue. It was fun.
Peace,
Syzygy
Ive hit 130 (redlined in 6th with 16t front sprocket) and 125 now (redlined in 6th with 15t front sprocket). Done it many times. When the bike was stock it would only go 114. Im wondering what I could do with a 17t front sprocket.
Side note; I raced my friend in his stock acura rsx type-s 6speed yesterday :D . from a stop I got bus lengths on him by 30mph, no contest 8) . from a 50 roll I got a few bus lengths by 90, again no contest :thumb: . from a 100 roll I only had a few cars on him untill 120 when he started to catch back up. after that I was topped out (125mph) and hepassed me going 140ish  . It was seriously a surprise that I beat him after 100, It was no surprise though that he had a :2guns: higher top speed.
97mph passing a truck. Had more left - felt that way anyway - but the pass was over so I backed off.

yes indicated by stock speedometer, which I know is off (as most bikes are) by ~10%. But those speeds were with my old rear tire which was worn badly. with the new rear tire redline in 6th is now 128-129 with a 15t due to larger circumference.
104 actual and still accelerating, but ran out of straightaway, and had to jump on the brakes for turn 1
Just under 120 (indicated) (so probably 108 reality :icon_lol:)

130 gps tracked and on the mechanical speedo
Readings taken about a month ago:
118MPH (190KMH) at night with fresh air.
I've managed to hold a little beyond 100MPH (160KPH) uphill.
Bike is an oldie '91 blue with 82000Km (51000miles) and has a 17 teeth sprocket.
(was a little faster years ago).
Did 120 mph indicated a couple of times on an empty motorway - with only about 3/4 of the throttle. It felt as if it would go faster, maybe another 10 mph (indicated), but it was a bit too scary to try that. The tach never worked since I got the bike so I don't know what RPMs it had. Started life as a naked E model, but then got a front fairing and a dual headlamp conversion and a Scorpion exhaust. Everything else is stock.
I did 110.6 actual today on my way to work. level, with slight headwind
My GS500F... ~95 mph in a burst. I never ride consistently faster then 5 over the limit here in Canada.
My bike handled much better at faster speed with the lower plastics removed. No as much cross wind messing me up.
