Title: Where to find connectors?
Post by: Train on March 10, 2009, 02:53:39 PM
Gurus- I need the connectors that crimp on the end of wires and then clip into the housing. I'm looking for the connectors that were on a 91 (or similar) bike from the left switch cluster to the main wiring harness. I have the main plastic housing all of these wires clip into, but I don't have enough of the male connectors to replace the connectors on the 2005 switch cluster. Do you guys have a part number for these things (they look brass to me, but the metal obviously doesn't matter.)

Or, if you guys recommend, I guess I could just pull off all of the connectors from both the main wiring harness and the switch cluster and replace them with currently produced connectors and a new housing that they all will clip into. Does this make sense?

Thoughts?

Any thoughts, should I post pictures of what I'm talking about?

Very cool site! Thanks for that. I was just considering a wiring mod on my bike that will go much better if I can find a pair of connectors to add a short section between two halves of one of the stock connectors. Train, please post when you find out which connectors from the sites match the stock GS connectors, I'm very interested in what you figure out.

Cool, I'll follow up. I went ahead ordered a bunch of the one's from the greyish box - the one's that say for vintage suzuki, honda, etc. bikes. They look right and even if they're not, it was all of $10. I'll let you know...

Our bike's electrical connector pins have been used on countless vehicles for as long as I can remember.  I would have gone to the auto parts store first, then search online if I struck out, which I doubt.  Glad you found them.

And yes, it's an EXCELLENT idea to make-up patch connectors to wire-up modifications you may do so you don't bugger up the stock harness.  That's the PROFESSIONAL way to do it!  :thumb:

:) Brother, I went to Kragen auto parts, two Napa autoparts, an AC delco warehouse, and two electronic stores. Trust me, those damn things are NOWHERE to be found locally. But, hopefully the ones I ordered this morning will fit the bill. As you say, I really don't want to mess up the wiring harness with new/non-original stuff... I'll keep you guys posted when they arrive.

Yeah, my bike came with all kinds of horrible modifications that I spent a lot of time undoing. When I got the bike it had a huge number of crimp connectors in the tail section that kept failing and making the brake and tail lights go out. They all went out one night on my way home and I finally declared war on non stock connectors and got rid of as many as I could. Up until now I've mostly headed back towards stock wiring by going to the local motorcycle salvage yard and begging them to cut connectors off wiring harnesses they had, but for my next couple of projects, I want more connectors and I'd rather just make them.

Update: The connectors are in, and they are the right size. I'll get them installed in the next day or two when I get a lengthy break from work.
