Title: Recomendations on GS Exhaust?
Post by: PAINTNJ on September 23, 2003, 06:39:59 PM
I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations on a good exhaust system for my 91 GS.  I heard that SV650 slip-ons work is that true?

I moved this from for sale forum...

Depends on what you're after. Performance? sound? Looks?
For sound only and *maybe* a little performance you can use a slip on. Meaning you're cutting the stock exhaust and installing a Cobra F1s/F1r since thats the only slip on made for the GS.

You can also graft(weld) pretty much any end can onto the stock pipes, like the sv650 can. Why would you use a stock can from an sv though? That would purely be a visual upgrade since it wont noticably sound different IMO. You can check my site for a picture and diescription of one members install of a sv650 end can. Note that he did it because he took it off his SV when he installed an aftermarket one on it so he just had it laying around.

Full systems are also available. Only one you can buy new though is made by Vance & Hines. If you find a used one you might find a Yoshimura, Hindle, etc. You'll need to rejet carbs for a full system though.

Hope this helps.

I have one and it's great - makes my bike 20 km/h faster in top speed...  8)

But maybe the carbs are just not setup right for the stock exhaust, as with it I only get up to 160 km/h top speed.

You don't HAVE to, but even with a stock exhaust a stage 1 rejet is recommended.
