:p i dont have a garage or a jack (other than the scary scissor jack from a subaru) and have no idea how to support the bike otherwise. can i just take the fork off while the bike is on it's center stand?

Nope, you are screwed!  :tongue2:

Just put a block of bricks (or something like that) under the engine.

borrow a jackstand from somebody or buy a cheap one at wallyworld.....set the bike on centerstand then position the jackstand behind the fork/in front of the engine.   Straddle the front tire and lift up the front end, it will rock the bike back on the rear tire.  At the same time lift the jackstand support up and set it under the crossbar of the frame in front of the cylinder head.   Let the front end back down.....wa la both wheels off the ground and sturdy too.

Park the bike under a tree. String up the handle bar to the tree with bike on center stand. Then remove away.
Cool.
