Title: Throttle cable
Post by: twinotter on March 15, 2009, 02:44:03 PM
Hi, Help.

There is a tease of Spring here in the Great White North, and started the GS500E 1999 after a long winter today. I am having a throttle cable issue. Over the winter i pulled the carbs and cleaned them and added a clean air filter. Bike started fine but i am having a problem when i turn the handle bars to the left. Revs fine with the bars straight and turned to the right but climb to 4000 when i turn them to the left. They drop back down when i straighten them out.
I kept the locking nuts at the carb and handle bars more or less where they were when i pulled the carbs. I have lifted the gas tank, but am trying not to completely remove it again, and had a friend turn the bars and i swear the slack is in the cable. I know this is probably a routing problem but i do not seem to be able to find any relief. It was a beautiful day and all i got to do was listen to others in the neighbourhood ride. Any suggestions.

Make sure the cable is routed properly and lube it while you're at it.  It's obviously hanging-up.  If it's getting frayed, replace it.  Don't get yourself killed over a $15 throttle cable.  Here is a link to an online service manual that covers through 1997.  Suzuki didn't switch to dual throttle cables until 2000 so yours is the same:

Thanks for the idea's but here is another piece of info. I have lifted the gas tank enough to get my fingers in there and can feel the slack in the cable even when i turn the bars all the way left. In fact i can feel no change in the cable through the complete range of turning motion. And all the advice says make sure the cable is routed properly. Can any one discribe the proper routing to me. The cable seems to be free yet the engine response to a handle bar turn says it is  pulling somewhere.

I had that problem when I put the GenMar risers on my 97.  The bars were moved back and full right lock would race the engine.  Turned out to be the choke cable pulling the enricher valve open and racing the engine in that case.  You need to pull the tank so you can see exactly what the cables are doing at full lock.  You can see if the throttle cable is moving the shaft it actuates or if a miss routed choke cable is actuating the choke enricher valve.

Hi
Thanks gsjack. Although I haven't had time to go check your suggestion., work week and all, it sounds good at this point. I did not do any checking of the choke cabling when trying to solve the problem the first time. I will investigate this weekend and let you know. Thanks. I have my fingers crossed.
