Title: Above Full; too much oil?
Post by: Rema1000 on March 15, 2009, 03:23:12 PM
I overdid it changing oil, and added enough to go above the "F"ull mark.  Bike is on center-stand, and I'm not screwing-in the dipstick to check.  After running the engine for 1 minute and killing the engine, the oil level goes right up to the end of the "flat" part of the dipstick, but not onto the round shaft.  I'm guessing that's 1/2 quart too much?

Do I need to remove some oil, or will the GS be happy?

I would get Turkey baster from the 1$ store and suck some out

The bike will take a little more than 3 quarts if you change the filter.  If you don't, 3 quarts is a little too much, but I doubt it's enough to hurt.  Besides, it'll burn away quick enough unless it's a new bike.  If it's considerably over the full mark, siphon a little out with a piece of 1/4" plastic tubing.  Turkey baster won't work, too fat and won't go down deep enough.  You don't want it way over the full mark.  Your oil won't circulate properly and can damage the engine.

I change the filter every other oil change and put in 3 quarts every time I change oil.  When I change the filter the oil level is a bit below full and when I change the oil only it comes out to about the top of the flat like you described.  I've done that many times without any disasterous results.  The excess oil usually goes fast.
