Title: I'm done for '09...disappointed...
Post by: oramac on March 19, 2009, 05:43:05 AM
Mods:  Yes, this exact post is also located in Meet and Greet, but since not everyone checks there regularly, I'm also posting it here to try to generate interest/spread the word.  I humbly request that you please don't move or delete this thread.  Thanks!   :kiss3:

OK, so it's about that time.

Spring is upon us, our bikes are coming out of the mothballs, the flowers are starting to bloom, and the riding season is about to be in full swing across the country.   :thumb:

It's nearly rally season! (http://www.gsrallies.com/)

You need a vacation; and what better vacation than to hang out with interesting, like-minded individuals, take in fantastic scenery, enjoy excellent indiginous food fares, and ride some supreme roads?

Major rallies planned only for gstwin.com have had mixed results.  I think the best turn out we've had was five riders at deals gap a few years back (me, alphafire, ashman, thatguy, and rangerbrown).  Recently, I've been trying to get gstwinners to attend rallies hosted by thegsresources.com.  Those bikes are the older brothers of our beloved motorcyces, and that forum has a clientelle make up much like our own.  It's a fantastic, diverse group of guys and gals that are interesting to talk to, and even more fun to hang with in the twisties!

The page linked HERE (http://www.gsrallies.com/) gives several options for GS-love fellowship.  Brown County Indiana  in May, Deals Gap  in June, The Indy MotoGP  in September, and links to other GS-related rallies across these United States throughout the year.

Information will be forthcoming, and I will post it up here as it becomes available.  No matter what you ride, you will be welcomed with this group!    Even though I've moved on to my SV, I still look forward to riding with you all and the GSR group.  I mean, lets face it.  Those of us that cut our teeth, earned our lumps, and honed our skills on the fantastic Suzuki GS bikes always seem to be the classiest individuals!

Hope to see you at a rally! (http://www.gsrallies.com/)

Wheeler's shop was amazing.  He went out of his way to get us on the road.  Loaned us tools, repaired parts at no cost, and had a hella cheap clipon for Nate.   :thumb:

I thing the best thing about riding the Dragon at night was dodging the snakes.

So, May or June?

Brown County, IN in May, and Deals Gap in June.  I'll be attending both of those at the least.  Both rallies are great, and offer great rides, but obviously TN, GA, and NC in June will have the wider variety of twisty roads and vistas.

Okay, so I thought I'd bump this up a little.  The Brown County, Indiana rally is just over a month away (five weeks), and the Southeast Rally (Deals Gap) is two months out.  The folks over at thegsresources.com are currently discussing schedule issues and routes.  Go check out their sites and give input if you feel so inclined.  I know that work schedules and finances are questionable right now, but it would be nice to see more GS500's out and about.

The weather is starting to warm, and I'm already building my mileage on my new-to-me SV.  I just want to spread the joy.

Brown County...two weeks away!   :woohoo:

I got my new pilot power rear tire on, it's scrubbed in and the chicken strips are all gone.  I'm ready to roll some fine Indiana sweepers and twisties.

Southeast Rally (Deals Gap/Tail of the Dragon) is in six weeks.  Lots of great riding and camraderie ahead.

[update] Brown County, Indiana is next weekend.  The rally attendees have booked one motel solid, and are reserving rooms in a second now.  Should be a good group of classic GS riders (as well as others...like my SV).

I haven't seen much response from riders on this board, but all are welcome to attend.  The Southeast Rally is currently five weeks away.   :woohoo:

Links to info on both rallies can be found in the original post.[/update]

So, I did the Brown County, IN rally last weekend.  Man, what a blast!  I rode down on Thursday afternoon.  Hit some scenic roads along the way.  Met up with the group in Bedford that evening and chilled...Friday, however, the FUN began!

Friday:  We met up at the motel at about 8:00 AM, downed some coffee and doughnuts, then geared up and rode out by 9:00.  We had a group of about 20 bikes to start.  Once we got everyone to the good roads, we split into smaller groups based on riding styles.  I was in the "small group of hardcore iron butted red-eyed slobbering curve maniacs on a 300-350 mile all-day romp"  We rode ALL OVER Southern Indiana and hit some fantastic roads.  We ate lunch at a restaurant over looking the Ohio River called, ironically, "The Overlook".  We logged well over 300 miles that day, and made it back to the motel by about 6:30 PM.  Dinner at a Mexican restaurant that night was delicious, and the evening was capped with an impromptu get-together with everyone at the motel until about 3:00 AM.

The Overlook:

Dinner at the Mexican Restaurant.  The guy in the yellow jacket is Don.  He rode his GS all the way from Florida.  Interesting guy!

Next post will detail Saturday.

Saturday morning started out soggy, but decent.  Breakfast (brunch) was at the Story Inn in Story, Indiana.  This place is unusual, but has EXCELLENT gourmet food.  I mean, I had biscuits and gravy, but the biscuits were amazing.  You'd have to taste it to understand.  We hit patchy drizzle here and there, but stayed mostly dry.  It cleared up by 2:00 PM, and was beautiful the rest of the day.  Tacked on another 250+ miles in six hours of riding.  Finished it off with another gathering at the motel, and a huge pizza / beer party!  Good times!

The Southeast Rally promises even more fun and spirited riding.  The group for that rally will include many of the riders pictured above, and more.  They were all super individuals and conscientious riders.  I hope some of you can make it down...it will surely be a blast.  As it turns out, I'll be there for the Saturday ride only at the Southeast Rally.  It looks to be a great time though.   :woohoo:

Less than three weeks away now.
