I thought I saw this mentioned somewhere but wanted to verify. Also are the guage pods etc the same as the older ones? I need a tach that isnt cable driven or a shorter tach or something because with the twin headlights it doesnt like the angle it is at. I've tried moving it around but it still sometimes hangs at some RPM and wont go higher until I am like 2-3k above that rpm.

Looks like the same mounting there..now is it mechanical or electrical tach..
electronic. Notice in the below pic that there is nothing where the old mechanical tach cable used to thread into the head (and no corresponding oil leak).

Also notice where the oil cooler line attaches to the head? That spot is a blanked over bump on older models so I think it should be possible to retro fit oil coolers onto unequiped engines.

Did anyone notice the new speedometer goes to 200!!! my 91 only goes to about 130!
ok i just realized thats in kilometers... uggh.. just kick me now :guns:
One little line past 200km/h is 210. That equals 130mph.
And as for the electronic/mechanical tach, I was mistaken and thought you were asking about digital vs. analog. So I just supplied pictures.
Oh yea...That oil leak is atleast fixable...Mine dont leak at all...cos ~4 years ago I put in a new o ring. The electronic tach is a pain by itself...My vulcan's all of a sudden quits working...(battery being low causes it to die I think) and has a slew of other hiccups...For example when you turn the key it will kick to 5-6K and die back down...etc etc.
Cool.
Srinath.
Has anyone noticed the modification to the carbs? I think it has carb heaters now.
I'm hoping that is a TPS sensor.
What exactly is a TPS sensor? With the oil cooler would the bike be less cold blooded as in previous models?
Throttle
Position
Sensor
Its a poteniometer that tell the ignition computer at what position the throttle is at, and thus what the user wants from the engine. It then sets the appropriate ignition timing.
An oil cooler would have nothing to do with the GS reluctance to run smoothly when cold, that is caused by the lean jetting required to pass emmissions requirements. If anything, outfitting it with a TPS and a smarter "brain" to use it, along with revised jetting might help instead.
hi,
the sensors is not new. the 03er definitely have one. i through the 01 and the 02 have it too, but not for sure.
arne
Thanks for the info. I had a Factory Stage I Jet Kit and a V&H ignition advancer on my old '97 but didn't really notice it helping with it being cold blooded. Of course I did ride some in winter. :)
My '01 definitely does not have one of those things on/near the carbs.
OK, James G, your thinking abit like me, TPS, now, what is a basic Throttle Body? would you agree(in basic terms) its just a carb missing the slide parts, and floatbowl parts, and is basicly just a Venturi with throttle place and an IACV Idle Air Control Valve or inthis case Air Mixture screw? now say we take a spare set of 34mm carbs and make a billet plate to Hold the injector and Fuel coupling and it slips into the top and bolts down where the top cap is. then for most part, seal up all the passageways save mixture screw circut with Epoxy, would this not be a crude throttle body? with proper Ventri? being as the vacume is still behind the throttle plate. granted it wouldnt be PORT injected. but figure an SV injector would be about right size as fuel flow. the ECM for it would have to come from better grey matter then what sloshin in my brain pan but what do you think of the Theory?
A friend of mine is developing a Megasquirt FI system for his land speed GS450 out in California. Acording to him, fitting an FI system isn't that hard. I am waiting for him to get it perfected, and then I may pick his brain about retrofitting it to a GS500.
Yes you could probably modifiy a carb into a throttle body. But a FI body is really not much besides a tube with a venturi and injector nozzle on one end and a butterfly valve in the center. If you can't find a donor, it would probably be easier to fabricate the whole thing from scratch.
Thanks for the TPS report James.
But... um... yeah, you forgot to put the new cover sheet on it. You see, we're putting new cover sheets on all TPS reports that go out. Did you get the memo about the new cover sheets for the TPS reports? I'll make sure you get another copy of that memo.
