Hi,
I was wondering if this amount of pitting on the brake piston surface is acceptable or warrants the need for a new piston set.

That's fine. Clean it up with a Scotch Brite pad.
Inspect the inside of the caliper bore for corrosion. If it is about the same, Scotch Brite it too and reassemble.
I am talking, of course, mainly of the deepest pit in the middle of the picture that will be in contact with the rubber seal.
Wonder whether it might allow a leak, though I haven't had a leak yet.
I do intend to replace the rubber seal though.
The pitting on the end of the piston doesn't concern me much.
Is it still okay to use?
Jenya
I wouldn't sweat it. But then again there is only one way to find out if it is going to leak.
