Title: $2000 to spend on your 07gs500f?
Post by: Chanse on March 26, 2009, 12:44:57 PM
What would you all do if you had 2 grand to spend on your GS. I already have some ideas but I wanted to see if anyone out there had any fresh ideas. Im kinda already thinking of katana FE, Katana Rear wheel, and kat shock or gsxr shock. lets see your ideas.

I don't think those ideas would even cost $1000, much less $2000...

$2000 on a GS gets you better suspension, better wheels, and better brakes.

Buying an SV650 gets you better suspension, better wheels, better brakes, fuel injection, an aluminum frame, and a much more powerful engine.

You can do almost everything there is to do on the GS if you want to spend $2000.
So...

Powdercoated frame and wheels
repaint tank and plastics
Double bubble windscreen
Full exhaust system
lunchbox filter
Rejet
GSXR Front End
Powdercoated GSXR or Kat rear shock
SS front and rear brake lines
Wave disk rotor for front and back
New tires
Rear seat cowl painted to match bike
clip-ons
new sprockets and chain of your choice
rear hugger
oil change
new brake pads
Change all fluids and lines
LED dash lights
HID headlight
Top Saddlery tank cover and matching clip-on tank bag
Top Saddlery custom seat with gel

I'm sure if you did all that you would manage to spend around $2000  :thumb:

Hmm, $2k on my GS? I have two of them, and both could use paint... That would probably be a grand right there... That of course assumes I can get the project GS actually running. I don't think there is a large parts expenditure needed, just a few things here and there and lunch for my buddy who helps me out all the time. Upgraded suspension for both bikes would be nice. I already have one Kat shock, so perhaps just another kat shock for the second GS, then perhaps split the difference and get one kat front end and one set of progressive springs... I've been kicking around the idea of building my own set of gauges for my project GS given that its gauges are in pretty terrible shape. I like the idea of electronic gauges, but none of the gauges out there do all the things I want and most of them look like oversized bicycle computers. I want something cool and different with interesting telemetry data I can toss into Google Earth or sync with helmet cam video. I could probably spend the rest of the cash on that... I work in a place with lots of engineers and a machine shop and I'm a programmer, so I'm sure I could get it done... Oh yeah, top and side racks with hard luggage would be good too. My current vision is to have one GS as more of a "touring" style setup with lots of luggage space and a windsheld and all that while the other becomes more of a canyon carver that is lean and mean but not necessarily as comfortable for long trips.

I would get better and healed up before I start wrenchng on my GS, else all the 2g will go towards medical bills and pain killers.
Cool.

I think $2000 is too much to sink into a perfectly good late model GS.  If you're really set on spending the two grand on motorcycle stuff, I'd sell the GS and put the proceeds toward a fancier bike.

If I wanted a SV, I could sell my bike and pay cash for one.  I don't do it because I'm satisfied with the great handling and 105 mph of the GS.  I like the easy maintenance, and my g/f likes the real passenger seat, rather than the Kotex-sized rear seats most new sport bikes have.  It also looks more like a motorcycle and less like a mechanical insect, which is the appearance of almost all non-cruisers these days.

Did all the motorcycle engineers working today grow-up watching Transformers?  :dunno_white:

Besides, if I plunked-down for a new bike the SV is no longer the 1st choice in the $6,000-$7000 price range.  The ER-6n and Ninja 650 will eat the SV ALIVE.  I am pleased that the Japanese have made the parallel twin into what it could have been for a long time.  It is superior to a V-twin, and the EX 500 and everything that followed has proven it.

And what's up with the Gladius?  Looks like a slightly re-packaged SV to me.

More food for thought: I just helped my boss buy a CBR 600 last night for $1600. It needs new front brakes and has been dropped, but I test rode it then rode it back to his place and I have to say that riding a 100 horsepower bike was pretty fun...
