Title: what should I do
Post by: mach1 on March 28, 2009, 07:57:50 PM
So I was doing a tune up on my explorer today I cleaned regapped the plugs but I need to replace the wires (Service engine light is on and the engine is ruff at idle in D or R its ok with no load) cleaning the plugs fixed the issue a lil but not all the way. Kragen and pepboys are out of stock and cant get them today. I need to drive to san Diego tomorrow and that a 1.2 to 2 hr drive. when im driving it feels fine only shales when at a stop light. do you think it will be fine the light only came on today.

Find out why the light came on.  Can you read Ford codes yourself, or do you need a reader?  Google your year and model and "engine light."  My Maxima will flash the check engine light in a pattern when I turn a screw on the ECU.  Then you look the pattern up on a chart and it tells you which problem is causing the light.  I don't know if Fords work that way or not, but I would bet you can find it on "the Google."

hmmmm.....in a do or die situation..like you have to go and you have no other means to get there....put her in nuetral at the lights. It will relieve that load thats causing the rough idle i think.  Try it first. Now dont get me wrong, im not sayign thats the cause of your problems.  It definetly isnt.  But its a technique to use to get by with until the problem is fixed.  If it was me, Id take my gs.  Better on gas. and a helluva lot more fun. 2 hours on that thing is a breeze.  either way.  Your choice.

OR do as he said, BUT enroute, find an autoparts place on the way. or even a wal-mart

have you tried a pep boys or autozone further away. I thought one of the dealers had a 24x7 parts dept. Not sure if it was galpin.

If you need a code reader I got one. I have found autozone carries a lot more stuff than kragen.. try autozone.

+1 on checking the code and hey if every thing fails I can tell you how to make a plug wire out of a coat hanger. Not pretty but it will get you home.  :tongue2:
